Forums - Sales - Holiday Software Sales, 2007

I've just finished compiling data for this holiday, according to VGChartz.com. I will continue to add to this data if and when it is corrected, and as further data is added.

These are software totals for each platform; these totals are worldwide. I repeat -- these are worldwide total software sales. I began calculating on November 3rd, because that represents almost exactly two months,  because that's about when the holiday season begins, and because Ioi began putting together worldwide software totals at about that time. Here are the totals thus far, from November 3rd, 2007:

Nintendo Wii:  30,451,000
Microsoft Xbox 360: 25,781,000
Sony Playstation 3: 13,755,000

Several things of note here:

1) The 360 has outsold Wii software in America alone in this time frame. This is expected, because there are more 360s than Wiis in America. The Wii makes up the difference (and then some) in Europe and Japan, which is also expected, since there are more Wiis in Jap/EU than there are 360s.

2) PS3 is at around 50 percent software sales of the 360, and around 1/3 the software sales of the Wii. This is also approximately as expected, as this is almost directly proportional with current install bases.

3) The Wii, 360, and PS3 all have their "bundled" games included.

4) This is a LOT of software. Without doing the math, it appears that the last two months have seen as much software sold as 5-6 months from January-August.

I'll aggregate DS and PSP software totals as well, shortly.

Other things of note:

1) The 360 outsold the Wii's software total by over 1 million in the first week of this calculation. The next week, it sold very slightly more than the Wii's total software (within 100k units). The week after that, the 360 sold very slightly less than the Wii's total software (again, within 100k units). The week after that the gap widened in the Wii's favor, and the Wii hasn't looked back since. Expect the 360 to outsell Wii software again at key moments like the week of GTA IV. It's also possible this trend will simply reverse itself, although the fact that this happened during the holidays (when, again, a hugely disproportionate amount of software is sold) is more indicative than two months in the early year would be.

2) PS3 software is more than holding its own as well, with very strong sales in the EU counterbalancing slightly weaker attach rates in Japan and the US.

3) These totals are estimated down to the thousand, in case you hadn't noticed.

very nice, If you just looked at Dec, it would be even more in the Wii's favor... The last 2 weeks have been amazing for Wii. If I remember correctly Nov NPD actually had 360 about Wii, so the Wii made up alot of ground.

Do you know if this is a record of sort for a VG sales during holidays season.

I believe Ioi says it was, yes.

And I'm not looking to simply make this tilt in the Wii's favor. I tried to a balanced calculation, and not just frame it in a misleading manner. Several key 360/PS3 titles came out in November, and shouldn't be ignored.

I think the EU/JAP will account for alot of PS3 sales until/unless America embraces PS3 exclusives in 08.

Make that EU alone, because PS3 software sells worse in Japan that in America (both absolute numbers and attach rate wise, as Bod calculated in another thread).
