What exactly is this awful, degrading and socially unacceptable medium doing to our beloved youth, the people of the future? What sort of world will we be looking at when today's youth is turning to open virtual worlds for enjoyment? What ever happened to the days of 'Ball in a Cup', 'Operation' and 'Dress-ups'? WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMING TO!? It's reaching boiling point now, and it's finally time to take a stand against the immature, childish and politically incorrect virtual experiences that are turning people into terrorists. What exactly are videogames doing to our youth? Games improve problem solving skills I'm not quite sure how cracking a code or solving a puzzle is especially beneficial in the real world. What sort of benefit can a person get from the trial and error experiences a videogame can offer? Today's youth need real-life, on-the-job problem solving experience. It's not like airline pilots or the army use simulators to train personnel, so why should we be turning to videogames as a way to better a young adult's ability to complete a task? And what's all this "Achievements" crap? Rewarding individuals for completing an objective? Rubbish! Back in my day I would get a strap to the hand, even when I did something right. Bring back corporal punishment please. Gamers are less likely to take drugs, more likely to perform better at school Firstly, I'd like to say that not all drugs are bad. Hell, you could buy a canister of cocaine back in the day (some time in the 1800s) for pain relief. So, really, gamers being less likely to take drugs isn't really all thatspecial. We should also take the lowly street dealers into consideration here. Videogames are destroying a very profitable and honest (if you ask dealers) profession through their own videogame addiction. It's an awful prospect. I mean, why is the government spending so much time and money on anti-drug campaigns when the very people it's aiming the campaigns at aren't actually taking drugs? I say ban videogames and get these kids back on the streets. Games connect the youth of the world I hear all this talk about "The Face Page" and "The Tweeter", and I can't help but think, "What ever happened to a good ol' cuppa and a nice, long chat?". It's downright ludicrous that these videogames are initiating interaction over digital-virtual-space-whatever and encouraging today's young to engage in competitive interaction. I hear murmurs that the young people of today play "online competitions" with people around the world. What concerns me is that your children can be talking to someone called "Mo-hum-add" in Iraq. I don't want my kid talking to some terrorist over the World Wide Internet. You don't know what they might do. And what's all this talk about "friends"? How can someone you've never met be your "friend"? Aren't you meant to communicate, interact with, share common interests, compete, debate and discuss things with friends? How can you do these things with people ON THE INTERNET!?!? Games entertain in the face of global recession Entertainment is overrated and always has been. Sure, some places in the world are really struggling now, but what ever happened to the good ol’ days of a pen and paper? I’ll donate some crayons to the youth of the world if I have to. I mean, how can entering virtual fantasy worlds improve the mental state of an individual? I think that if we stopped playing childish games and took more notice of the world, we’ll realise how truly miserable it is. Entertainment makes us delusional, ignorant fools. Time to take notice of what’s happening around us, instead of taking refuge in things we enjoy. After all, forgetting about the problems in your life while you enjoy yourself won’t get anything done, will it? Games initiate creativity I keep hearing about this LittleBigEarth or whatever it’s called, a game that lets people create their own universes. This level of creativity can only be bad for our youth, as it’s far too complex for any casual person to really understand. What ever happened to the good ol’ sketch pad? Or writing? And as for the apparently growing independent videogame development scene, it seems like a revolution to me. And we know what happens when a revolution happens: things change. Evil I tell you. Evil.
