Forums - General - North Korean Death Camps

Recently satellite images have captured in detail Death camps stationed in various areas in North Korea. These death camps are said to house more than 200,000 people. North Korea has long denied their existance, but many images and personal stores of people that have experienced these camps tell a much different story:

Kang was only nine years old when he and his family were sent there for political crimes.

'We had no food. We eat anything we could get our hands on -- rats, snakes, frogs, insects,'. 'We just had to find a way to survive.'

'Even though it happened a long time ago when I look at the satellite pictures I can still remember everything I saw and endured,' he said.

'The camp definitely looks bigger. For example, new buildings for prison guards weren't there before. I can only assume that means there are more prisoners being held and therefore more security is needed.'

Kang spent 10 years in Yodok before escaping to China in 1992 and wrote about his experiences in the book The Aquariums of Pyongyang.

Half of all

the inmates will die of starvation or malnutrition with others dying because of fatal diseases that thrive in the squalid conditions.

This is if they are not killed by torture, firing squad, or a public stoning by Kim Jong-Il's violent guards, former prisoners say.

One of the photos shows the Yodok camp, which holds an estimated 50,000 North Korean prisoners and is hidden in the mountains around 70 miles from the capital Pyongyang.

Salellite images can be seen in the link below.

Its amazing how easy it is to just turn a blind eye while these things are going on in a country today.

VGCHARTZ users what are your thoughts on this matter?

Can anything and should anything be done to stop such disgusting oppression?

I'm not surprised. I don't know what anyone can do, any sort of military intervention would be crazy. It's widely known that they have nukes and the government is batshit enough to use them. That's really fucking sad :/

I wish someone could do something about it. I have no idea what could be done. I feel so sad for North Koreans. T_T

I thought we said never again.

if you get a chance you should watch the documentary, National Geographic: Inside North Korea.

Lisa Lang got into the country with a small crew of camera men and were able to capture some of the things that takes place in the country. Its amazing how isolated and how many people starve there.

This is the sort of thing the US should be helping stop, not some bullshit "nation building" in Afghanistan or whatever they're still doing in the middle east.

It is interesting when you look at all the conflicts around the world. The U.S. and other U.N. countries were willing to get involved in the Lybia conflict while far worse things take place in North Korea. I think the main problem is the U.N. nations don't want to get involved in a situation like North Korea's due to the amount of resources, sacrifice, and potential threats that situation would pose.

I'm not trying to suggest we need to immediately go all out invasion to free those people, but the situation in N. Korea should make one question why we are so quick to get into conflicts such as Lybia but don't really want to even think about what could be done to help the people in N. Korea. This was the point of my thread to really show what actually goes on in that country and that pretty much nothing is being done about it, nor does it look like anything will in the near future.

I've already seen it many times, along with some other documentaries (watch Friends of Kim on YouTube, shows how staged NK is when people are visiting-and how stupid and ignorant some people are about the situation there). It's absolutely horrible there. It's hard to imagine what people have to go through.

While this is horrible.. I don't think using google maps is a good way to get to the bottom of this... *remembers beautiful satelite images which showed us WMDs in Iraq*
