I'm actually refuting a very finely shaded difference of view here. For the most part, this is just devil's advocate type stuff. I'm arguing the other side of things because I feel there is another viewpoint, that while not as preferable, is still just as valid. While I agree that all consoles will generally have SOME good game and features that make them worthwhile to play, that fails to consider ANY of the negative points or the price, as well as the relative value when compared to other systems. So what I don't agree with you about, is the idea that there isn't any reason to hate ANY system at all. I would feel quite within reason to site bad design, and poor cost/feature management, that either create a severely underpowered machine, or a severely overpriced console as being points over which it would be reasonable to hate a console. While you are bringing out a title or two for each system and looking to that as a reason to like a system, I can see that actually being a reason to hate that system. I like my console, because it has a lot fo games that I want to play, but then you show me a different console, that only has 1 or 2 games I want to play. If I wanted to play those games, I would have to purchase that console to play them, which is simply outside my budget range. If that console didn't exist, then those games that I like, exclusive to that console, might have had a chance of being on MY preffered console of choice instead. Some consoles are just poorly designed as well. Like the one portable system that you had to remove the battery in order to change your game, or teh virtual boy which caused physical eye strain, or the game gear which suffered from poor battery life and a clunky design that were terrible for portable design, or even teh PSP, which still suffers from limited battery life. Even though these systems have good games and other good features, those good games now act as bait, drawing us in to try these consoles even though these problematic features will time and time again irk and aggrevate us. Another point is when a console has become known for certain features, and your console of choice compares unfavorably in this category even though it is far better in other categories, such as how the Wii uses motion controls, but doesn't have heavy graphics or as much support in online. Even though it is beginning to implement more online features, people continue to compare it to Xbox Live. But by teh same token, 360 has been trying to develop casual games, but compared to Wii, is unable to compete in that line. Thus having another console means that your own console of choice is less likely to be able to broaden its own range of features. not everyone can simply buy any console that happens to have a game or set of features they like. Often, having one console with a set of feauters, but not another makes us feel dissatisfied with both, because neither one implements both of the features you want. With all this in mind, there are plenty of reasons to pick one console to support, and then only devote ire towards the other competing consoles. Then of course, if you choose to put your support behind a console that isn't as successful as its competitors, you will of course lose the support of developers and see a much smaller selection of games, hence the investment of $200 - $600 that you made becomes wasted. There are plenty of reasons to hate a different console, but one thing to keep in mind is that hating a console won't ACCOMPLISH anything. no company is going to go "Oh dear, Peter Wankoff in Assborough Hungary hates our console, I guess we'll just close up the factories and throw in the towel, we've as good as lost already" So while I agree that there isn't any point to hating another console, there are plenty of reasons to do so. |
Perhaps you can dislike a console, but to hate one is too much... There is no reason to hate any console, especially since you cannot create one yourself. They're still marvels of technology, and should at least be respected. Hating consoles is just immature. Besides, you judge the games, and not the consoles. By the way, the N-Gage is the console, that you had to remove the battery, in order to put a game cartridge in, but that was fixed with the launch of the QD, so it doesn't really count anymore.
