Forums - Gaming - Top 10 Genre Defining Game Franchises Of All Time

I agree with everything on that list. They all make sense.

50% correct, i'd say. The others, as other people here have already said, had other games that influenced them, or just weren't that influential in the first place.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

this article fails for not mentioning dota. as it created a new genra, that is played by a 30 million+ player base

Being in 3rd place never felt so good

How did Zelda not define adventure gaming or open word exploration gaming. it also was the first game where you could save your ptogress

True. The Legend of Zelda series should've definately been on this list. They probably didn't wanna put in too many Nintendo franchises.

"I don't understand how someone could like Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky, but not like Twilight!!!"

"Last book I read was Brokeback Mountain, I just don't have the patience for them unless it's softcore porn."

And why is Silent Hill on this list? Alone in the Dark gave birth to the survival horror genre, and Resident Evil made it popular and influenced what it is today. Silent Hill didn't do anything.

Ahahahahahaha!!! Srsly FF > Mario? You shitting me bro? Mario as a franchise defined 2D AND 3D platforming. FF would be at the bottom of the 10 if at all (no it does not deserve even to be on this list).

Mario didn't just defined a genre, it define a gaming era, it defined Nintendo as a company and to a lesser extend, it defined Gaming. (yes that's Gaming with a capital fucking G) No icon in video game is more universally recognizable as that annoying Italian plumber.

To compare the influence of Mario and FF is like comparing Chocolate and Shit.

They are both brown.

~~~~ Mario Kart 8 drove far past my expectations! Never again will I doubt the wheels of a Monster Franchise! :0 ~~~~
Why do you have the genres Tactical Espionage action and Survival Horror which are very small (especially espionage) and not major genres such as any form of strategy game?
Umm... They invented sub-genres just to be able to put some games on the list? Tactical espionage action? Sci-fi first-person shooter?
