Forums - General - Thinking about getting a HDTV, which ones do you recommend?

Yeah I am thinking about getting a HDTV in the January sales. I won't to spend around £600, £800 is the absolute max.

Would like it to be around 32-40 inches in size. Also LCD rather than Plasma or any other sought.

Is 1080p worth the extra money or is 720p fine?

So what do you guys recommend? Needs to be good for both TV and gaming.

 2008 end of year predictions:

PS3: 22M

360: 25M

wii: 40M

umm... any model?

Samsung and Sony make the best HDTV's around, I would get either one of those.

About the 1080p vs. 720p, I think someone else will answer that.

for 32"-40", it's a waste to get 1080p. i guess 40" you can go 1080p if you really want it, but from what's known, 42" and below, there's not much difference if any at all between 720p/1080i and 1080p. if you wanna go 42", the sharp aquos slim line series is awesome.

What do you want in the the TV? DLP is a nice alternative if physical size isn't important or you want a bigger screen for a reasonable price. If you go that route, you should also make sure glare isn't a problem with your viewing setup; DLPs can suffer because of their brightness level.

Do you plan on keeping the TV for more than 4-5 years? Will you use it as a computer monitor? If you answered no to both, 1080p is a waste. No console will use it much this generation and if you buy a 720p/1080i TV that deinterlaces properly, movies will look just as good in 1080i as they would in 1080p.

There are a lot of options in HDTVs and they all have their weaknesses... Expect a lot of different answers from people around here.

tombi123, I would check out the Bravia line-up for Sony.

@rocketpig

Thanks, won't bother with 1080p then.

Yes.. Check out and LCD TVs from Sony... Quality products.. If thats too expensive for you check out Vizio or Panasonic..

1080p Is worth it when the TVs are 40" +... Still it will make a slight difference in quality.. I'm sure if you bargain with the Salesman you can get a 1080p TV for around 1400 USD.
