well i think that about says it all, as somehow i agree with this.

Yeah, I wouldn't blame it on current overt racism so much as past racism and current structual problems due to racism.

i have to agree with that to. lets face it. the racsim faced today an't got noth'n on the early 1900's.

Yeah, it's kinda like if your running a race, and one guy is forced to stop for 10 minutes in the race.

Even if you've got equality from then on, the other guy is always going to be behind.

Which becomes an ethical quagmire in a larger economic framework, since you've got one group disadvantaged by past deeds, however by directly helping them you are hurting other unrelated groups.

Afterall your typical billionaire doesn't care about a poor white guy anymore then he does a poor black guy, whehter that poor white guy was around during the worse eras or whether his faimily just imigrated here from romania.

wow! that was great. perfect analogy.

Thanks, I probably stole it from one of my teachers.  I had like 4 classes on race and gender inequality in college.

Though actually, a better analogy would of been rolling two snowballs down a snowy hill.  Since wealth tends to make it easier to aquire more wealth, which explains why even when things are tilted in the favor of groups behind through things like the united negro college fund and various quotas the wealth gap only seems to grow.

Also why the wealth gap in general grows in this country, except in times a recession when it shrinks because the rich have more to lose.  Really no amount of income equality or even income inequality would fix the current situation, if anyting you'd need to find a way to simulate "wealth"... and again that brings up morality issues because you'd basically penalizing other snowballs because of the headstart a few of the big ones towards the bottom got.

Which is generally why even Obama supports stopping racial inequality via lifting up the entire bottom.  Sadly, with income based methods, it's never going to work.

Seriously?  I mean, I started out at a 2 year college because I had no idea what I wanted to do, and figured i'd get my mandatory classes out of the way on the cheap.

We actually had a course on that there.

Couple of major factors.

1. War on Drugs.
2. Privatization of Prisons and the hidden factors of this. Lobbyists for Prison industry have successfully lobbied for harsher sentences. Judges have been corrupted and been found taking kickbacks for harsher sentences, parole boards have been corrupted. Private prisons arent incented to rehabilitate people. There are incented to keep the people in.

Minor:
1. People deliberately committing crimes and getting caught for free healthcare. it does happen, but I dont have and data that shows how often.

I forgot to mention the privatization of prisons in my post.  This really needs to change (just as much as the war on drugs) considering private prison pretty much treat their prisoners like slaves and force them to work for pretty much nothing.  It has pretty much re-introduced slave labor back into the American society.

Ah yeah, being Lousiana might have something to do with it, me I'm from Ohio.

A lot of em have classes like that, the ones that try to be "college prep" ones for state colleges and those who can't afford to go to a big school all four years.

It probably didn't hurt that I went to one of the better community colleges in the area though, and probably the country.

A number of politcians actually came to speak there.  Even Obama spoke there after he became president.

I worked there for a while running the bookstores shipping and receiving.  Well the West Campus anyway which seems to be the one that gets all the special visitsors and such.

They often bring in a lot of authors and stuff too... one of the better ones related to race was the guy who wrote this book.  One you'd probably really enjoy as it goes into how crazy and indoctrinated racism is and the modern face of it.

The job was cool cause I could go on my lunch, and just sit in the courtyard and listen to lectures by authors a couple times a month, and get some free food.

Man I miss that job, but hey, when you gotta move, nothin you can do.
