The official word on the glossy Xbox 360

You may have heard last week that Microsoft is changing the outer finish of the Xbox 360 250GB consoles from a glossy black to a matte black finish, similar to the current Xbox 360 4GB model. 

Some of the news outlets that covered it mentioned having a choice between matte and glossy Xbox 360s this holiday. 

I wanted to set the record straight and let everyone know that that is not the case. 

We are actively transitioning all our Xbox 360 S consoles to a matte finish.  The consoles will start to arrive in stores over the coming weeks, so if you really love the idea of a glossy console don’t wait much longer.

Of course, we still may offer a gloss finish on Limited Edition consoles like the upcoming Gears of War 3 Console or the Star Wars Console, but if you have your eye on a glossy black console you don’t have much time left.

Kidding, kidding. I always liked matte better. I know on the PS3, glossy was a fingerprint/dust magnet. I assume the glossy 360 S was the same.

360 has gone matte, gloss, matte.  And the 4GB black Xbox was alays matte wasnt it?

Its all about shaving a few points of the cost imo. 

Why would they possibly be needing t make the 360 cheaper to manufacture?

Matte finish is cheaper and more important faster to finish.. and with the volumes MS is making the 360 it will save them millions..

So that when they cut price.... and they will.... they can keep up with demand and still make the healthy profits they have become used to with Xbox.

It's sunny in Redmond these days.

Microsoft performance and share price has really bucked the trend over the last year.

I wonder if MS is gonna go profit crazy and not cut price though -_-

They could, but only if they dont care about European performance and only if Sony dont.

If Sony cut, MS have to.  But Sony would surely rather not cut.

Also the constant statements about wantingto be number 1 worldwide this year almost makes a cut a certainty.

 

 

Well you'd think so, especially after Sony forecast 15 mill.

When they only managed 14.3 mill last year, with GT5 and the price cut still having some effect early in the year .. Vs? Has to be a price cut.

Man, I WISH they had done this earlier. I was actually tempted to get a 4gb 360 and buy my own HDD because I was opposed to the glossy. Every speck of dust shows up on my 360, now.
