I've been thinking lately, Sony has quite a few games releasing in the future. How many of them, besides Uncharted 3, will cross the 90 mark on Metacritic? Here's what I've come up with.
Resistance 3: Unlikely. I'd be surprised if Resistance 3 even reached its predecessors' scores. Sony exclusives have been scoring lower than their predecessors all year: Killzone 3, inFamous 2, LittleBigPlanet 2. I doubt Resistance 3 will reverse the trend and score 3 points higher than Resistance 2. In order to outscore R2 by 3 points, it would have to be an enormous improvement over Resistance 2 and, honestly, it doesn't look like it.
Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One: Unlikely. Same as Resistance. The past two Ratchets on the PS3 scored 89 & 87. The gameplay has changed quite a bit to account for the new 4-player co-op mode. WIll critics accept this change as an improvement to the Ratchet universe? Unlikely
GOW Origins: Unlikely GOW collection scored slightly lower than its PS2 counterparts. I see the same happening for GOW origins. That leaves it hovering in the 80s range since the GOW PSP games average at aroun 88.
ICO Collection: Likely. Both of the original games reach 90 meta. SOTC can greatly benefit from an HD. Many critics criticized the game for low frame rate. If the HD collection fixes this, then I see critics rating it high.
Twisted Metal: Possibly. The series has been on a long pause. Critics may see the game as a fresh experience and be lenient on it. Twisted Metal: Black scored a 91 on the PS2. But times of changed. Can Twisted Metal achieve the same feat? Time will tell.
Starhawk: Possibly. Warhawk scored an 84 back in 2007. This seems to be a huge improvement over its predecessor. The game got a lot of praise at E3 with many sites labeling it as 'best PS3 game' and 'best multiplayer'. Not many people played Warhawk, so I could see critics seeing the game as a fresh experience.
The Last Guardian: Possibly. The third game from team ICO. The first two both crossed the 90 mark on metacritic. Will TLG follow the same fate? I'm not sure. With many people running around citing SOTC as the greatest game ever, critics are going to have some very high expectations for this game. No matter how good the game is, I'm not sure it'll be good enough to reach 90 meta.
This may be another case where too much hype is a bad thing. Also, the game doesn't seem to be as action-oriented as SOTC. This can be a let down for some critics. But then again, it is team ICO. They have the potential to dazzle critics one more time.
My bet's on ICO collection
