Such a great invention, it allowed online multiplayer games to exist! And this also brings back memories of when we got our 1st computer, we were using AOL, and I still remember the dial up process ditinctly, sound and everything. It did a lot for online mulitplayer but it existed before the internet. I distinctly remember playing fs4 multiplayer with a 2400 baud modem. No servers ofcourse, dial up to your budy and connect for a multiplayer game.
Porn was plenty available too already through dial up bbs, just as pirated software, cheats, faqs. The real big advantage of the internet were the search engines. Altavista used to be my search engine of choice.
I was at the university of Amsterdamduring the birth of the internet and it baffles me today that nobody made a big deal out if it back then. There was usenet, mud and irc chat, and the search engines ofcourse, but the unviversity never really mentioned it while I was studying computer science. They tought us about this new big thing coming up, object oriented programming, but hardly anything about the internet.
