Forums - PC - The Happy cloud: Play your games faster

Thanks to the recent launch of Happy Cloud, PC gamers will be able to experience their favorite games a whole lot faster. This new platform promises to eliminate those pesky waiting times, which I’m sure will lead fans of large-file games buzzing for joy.

Happy Cloud is somewhat similar to Netflix: you have a large collection of movies, or in this case games,  and you can play any game of your choice whenever you’d like. The only thing in your way of that large collection of games is the annoying load screen. However with Happy Cloud, that isn’t a problem! Instead of waiting for sometimes hours for your game to load, you only have to let your game buffer for about 5-10 minutes.

How’s it work?

It’s simple: you select the game you want to play, then the service buffers for a few minutes. As soon as that’s done, you can play your game immediately! Happy Cloud streams the game’s files as you play, using a unique system that downloads exactly what you need next to continue playing! And the best part is, there’sabsolutely no lag. Sounds pretty cool, huh?

The platform is fairly new, so you’ll only see 10 games in the catalog right now. Luckily the games that are available so far are pretty good ones, so you can feel free to try out the program – yes, demos are available before purchasing. If I were you, I’d check out the catalog quickly – some of the games are on sale for as much as 75%!

Unfortunately, the Happy Cloud is currently only available to U.S. residents, but they plan on releasing their games to more countries soon. You can check out Happy Cloud’s site here – I’d definitely recommend it!

is it similar to onlive than? A competitor? I still get emails from onlive and they have been pushing some deals, i wonder if this is similar

I was reading about this when it launched around a month ago. It had just a few games though and i didnt want to buy any of them. Neat idea though.

yea, still only about 8-10 games. They have free trials on them though. The prices were still a little high, atleast compared to buying used or sales on steam

Indeed. It isn't liek OnLive either though because OnLive you can access with shittyhardware anywhere because the game is run on their servers. Meanwhile all this does is basically steam minus the initial download. In fact it sounds liek it's made for people exactly liek arx with slow internet connections. The game still runs on local hardware.

Basically it's like Steam exept you can play games as they download, so if you have fast enough internet you could DL the first couple hundred MB then start playing and as you play it continues the rest of the game. Basically you don't have to wait for the DL to complete before you start playing.

thanks for clearing that up guys. That does sound better than onlive cause you wouldn't have lag at all and it would have better graphics/run smoother. Steam/Valve should look into adding this.

I will be genuinely undsurprised if Valve do this temselves and then these poor guys will be left behind since it's their only neat perk.

I would just be happy if valve adds their promised downloader overhaul which will stop my ISP throtling steam DLs (the switch to http can't come soon enough) scheduling support and other bandwidth management tools. And the better patching will help as well with smaller updates.
