Sometimes I just think about solutions to various issues, and I can't think of much wrong with this latest suggestion.

This wouldn't apply to everyone, of course. My plan was to automatically sign up committers of serious crimes and regular repeat offenders to the organ donation list. This would mean that their organs can be  harvested after they die and donated to science! :)

It might reduce crime, and would also solve the issue of the current organ donation shortage.

Edit: Also, blood donation (unless they've got a medical condition which prevents them from doing so) - this would be much more useful in the short-term.

I think everyone's organs by default should be donated when they die.

If you want to opt out, you also opt out of receiving organs (except from anyone who wants to donate specifically to you).

Criminals would get exactly the same treatment...

Bad, criminals are a portion of the population with the worst health habits (drugs, alcohol, diseases....)... so they are also likely to have the worst organs to give...

Bad, also because you'd need to define criminals. Is robbing a bank without hurting anyone something that warrants desecrating your body after your death? Imagine a person is wrongfully accused of a crime, is religious and dies in prison, you'd be desecrating the body of a person whose religion might request him to be buried whole....

that and by the time you get this law passed we'll have the ability to grow organs individually.

If I'm going to rob a bank, the thought of my organs being donated to science 55 years from now when I die isn't going to sway me.  Also a lot of non-offenders add themselves to the organ donation list voluntarily; therefore this wouldn't even be a punishment for many people?  And it's not like your organs are being harvested right then and there, like I said there being harvested after you die 50-60 years from now for a crime you commited today?  I'm sorry, but I don't see how this would work.  Also solving the organ shortage?  A 70-80 year old's heart/organs wouldn't do much good to anyone anyways, for a crime he/she may of commited when they were 20-30.

How about giving every prison a blood bank? There could be a collection from every inmate once /year! That would be very useful

Every prison? Even the ones full of the injectable drug crowd guys who may well have AIDS?

But no, I don't think anyone should be forced to give away their blood while alive.

They check the blood that they take before they pass it on to hospitals :S

Unfortunately I believe it's possible for blood to be infected even if it passes the checks. In the case of AIDS, I believe they check for the antibodies, not the virus itself. If someone was recently infected they might have the virus in their blood but not the antibodies yet.

I don't approve of your plan, donation should be something that needs to be done voluntarily.

Also blood and organs from someone who's been raped 500 times, and been shooting himself full with prison drugs for 30-60 years? No thank you.

But as the need for blood and organs increases, we have to take these measures, surely?
