Forums - Sales Discussion - Why do people say the PS2 started out slow?

Huh? Is there anyone saying the PS2 started off slow?

As the figures show, look at the launch in Japan - almost 800k units on week#1!! Has anything ever got close to beating this in terms of weekly sales??

The numbers speak for themselves - the PS2 in two weeks sold MORE than the PS3 has in 5 months. What's scarier, is that at the current rate of sales - it could take another 2-3 months for the PS3 to reach "week 2" of the PS2 sales.

Redspear - estimated based on the last couple months remaining about constant.

I agree price has the potential to be the biggest factor, but there's no reason PS3 can't get down to $99 eventually.

The PS2 isn't even down there yet, why would you assume that the PS3 which is starting off twice as high could get anywhere near that amount?

Maybe he's trying to sell you his PS3?

Even in a best-case scenario ($100 drop every year which would be insane) the PS3 price will still be:

$499 in 11/07
$399 in 11/08
$299 in 11/09
$199 in 11/10
$99 in 11/11

So it won't reach a mass-market price 'till late 2010 and won't hit $99 until late 2011 when the next gen will probably be starting if not the year before.  Price is going to hurt the PS3 for the entire generation.

PS2 had a slow start and also no competition for over a year, by the time Gamecube and Xbox entered the market PS2 had a huge lead that it would never give up.

This time PS3 is behind 360 because MS rushed to market, and the Wii is outselling them 3-1 world wide and is supply constrained. Sony does not have the luxury of letting the PS3 slowly get an install base, because this time it wont happen.

PS3 will get less exclusives, every game that 3rd parties make will also be on the 360 and the 360 will always be cheaper. Wii will have tons of exclusives and will always have the best price.

PS3 needs a $200+ price cut right now. They can't wait until the Xmas season...

Oh yeah. There's a whole group repeating this mantra that PS2 launched slow, and GC launched fast, and this is exactly the same thing we're witnessing today.

Absolute garbage if you look at the numbers, but certainly you've seen the people saying it, here and elsewhere.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

Reminds me of political party talking points. Go out into enough outlets repeating a certain mantra and eventually you can change popular opinion. At least that's the plan

The Daily Show showcases this all the time. Always funny.

The Geico guy isn't a caveman. One ad showed he lives in an apartment, so he's getting offended over nothing. After all, the slogan is not, "So easy, a neanderthal could do it."
