The Japanese market is more hair-trigger responsive than the other two (though that might be because of more accurate weekly tracking there :/), so a jump ahead for a week means little

Keep this up for a month, or a year, then we'll have something. By god, i remember the glory days of the DS in Japan, when it pushed 100k a week

i had a brief look at how DS sold in the first couple of months and it is about the same with 3DS.

With the difference being that the DS had pretty much every possible thing going against it (except for Nintendo's long term strategy) while the 3DS had pretty much every possible thing going for it (except for Nintendo's long term strategy).

You should consider the price differences and the fact that people got scared off about the 3D. with a small percentage of people complaining it can scare off people who were looking foreword to it. Playing the 3DS could make you dizzy (or whatever) but what most people don’t know is that you get used to it (i did anyway). That was never a problem with the DS

I think the 3ds has more things against it that the ds had. It has the PSV against it (I know it is not in the market yet), with the same price point and superior specifications. it has against it the perception that it is an expensive handheld (that can be solve), it has a pretty bad catalog right now (that is going to change), it has a pretty bad battery life and it has the smartphones market against it.
