Forums - Sales - SMG May Have Changed the Course of Gaming History

I personally believe from the patterns of consumer purchasing I have seen in the wake of the release of SMG that 10 years from now it will viewed on the same level as OoT, M64, and others- Why? Because it has started a demographic revolution on the Wii. Before SMG the only people that bought the Wii were casuals who wanted a Wii for WiiSports and diehard Nintendo fans. SMG has forced the general gaming audience to buy a Wii and play it for the simple reason that it is considered to not just be the greatest game of this generation but of all time.

I believe that this is the reason that we have seen software sales turn around. Zelda:TP, MP3, Paper Mario, and other "gamer" games have been riding the coattails of SMG. The recent (and continueing) conversion of gamers to the Wii will have reprecussions for the rest of this generation. Games in general will sell better, more 3rd party support has come. MS and Sony see this happening. That is why they have changed their "Wii is second console" tune as of late and have been more critical.

SSBB will continue this and MKWii will give the "gamers" another game to keep them happy. Mark my words people will be talking about SMG for a long long time.

Well seeya you all on these forums next year- this is my last post of 07   (I am EST)

Bet with OriGin: Within 1 year Super Smash Bros. Brawl will be ahead of Mario Kart Wii (when aligning the one whole year from each region). 2 week ban from Vgchartz for the loser. Edit: Darn! Looks like OriGin will win.

I don't know if I'd quite put it like that. We have seen holiday sales boosts in effect for the last several weeks, which has coincided pretty closely with SMG's release. It's too early to tell if it's really had as much effect as you think it has. But I do agree that it's had a big impact; the sales numbers alone are testament to that, holiday effect or not.

Sky Render - Sanity is for the weak.

Well SMG didn't force me to buy a Wii. I bought one after I saw some preview stuff for Super Paper Mario and that game really amazed me. It was the second game I bought for it after Wii Sports (I'm in Japan ;-p )

I wasn't even sure if I would buy SMG at all. I did get it as a Christmas gift though. I still like SPM more than SMG, though.

I cough too when I saw Wii sports at top of sales. I hope this isn't a sign of the future for consoles. I can see why you hope that SMG is the reason a lot of people bought Wii but so far I doubt it.

...wiisports is a pack in... wii broke sales records wii sports sell alot.

IMO its just another Mario game, not to offend any die hard fans. I don't think its changed anything. The first one, mind you, changed games, but not the 17th one. Halo changed FPS games, Final Fantasy probably had some impact on RPG's, but SMG hasn't changed anything.

It hasn't changed anything per se, but it's a complete breath of fresh air in an industry flooded by shooters (even though I like shooters)

IT WAS NEVER *JUST* "CASUALS" THAT WERE BUYING THE WII!

Even if it were, what the **** is so "history changing" about getting gamers to buy another game system?

And MS/Sony stopped the "Wii is a second console" schtick months ago, when they realized it was kicking their ass and they had no way to stop it.
