I don't wanna get into a discussion, but I really am interested to hear what the religious explanation is. I'm really asking this.

The religious explanation would be too hard to answer as there are so many religions in the world. If you ask how my religion explains it that's a different question.
If you ask how the Judeo-Christian book (bible) explains it, it's straight-forward really. God created man (/woman) in his image, with purpose and intentionality. Every design in the human body has a purpose. The hymen, as other organs, serves a specific purpose. If I were to extrapolate (outside the bible, using my intuition given the bible's text), and try to understand the mind of God, I would say that the hymen is there as a seal (imperfect may it be) of a woman's virginity. That's what its purpose would be. Why is it important to know that? It is testament of faithfulness, a huge component of the person of God as described in the bible.
On the evolutionary side of things, Design is considered, but only as a result of time and chance. They call it the blind watchmaker. A watch is produced, in all its design, though not by intent, but by chance. The only problem comes when Nature, as a creative force, creates evolution with intent. There's a double-teaching there. It's not only by chance, but also by directed change (by Nature as the agent, capital N, guided by the principal of survival). At that point, the question is begging to be asked: what is the intent of the hymen when it comes to survival of the fittest? None of us know the answers to these questions, but many guesses and speculations are suggested in school textbooks and taken for truth. I was curious about this one :)

The thing is many animals (mammals) have hymens too, so it can't be something that is specifically designed for humans. It's just that humans give the hymen an importance and animals don't. You won't see an elephant caring about purity.
As for evolution, I'll say what I think: it may simply be a method to protect the vagina until it's ready to serve its fuction. Having it may be better than not having it.
Also, evolution is a random process, so useless things may appear. Even if having a hymen were not to help much, it isn't really a handicap either. A female without a hymen is not less likely to survive. This can also be said of the appendix, it doesn't seem to have a clear purpose. Or the toes (or the toe nails). They are remnants of past evolution processes but they don't detract from your chances of survival, so they stayed.
I respect your beliefs, and I'm not trying to argue against the existance of God. But if you want to disprove something as well documented as evolution a few weak fact aren't enough, you need much stronger arguments. If you believe the theory is wrong it should be because of your own faith (which is perfectly fine).
I've gone extremely off-topic here, I apologise.
