I think Nolan is going for the realistic approach. Bats has some epic foes but they're a bit over the top. Bane is pretty bad ass, actually. Think of him as the anti-Batman. He "made himself" like Batman made himself. Except, instead of having billions of dollars at his disposal, Bane was born into prison. He's unrelenting, very cunning, and very powerful. We already had Batman overcoming his fear in the first film and overcoming a psychological foe in the second. Now, instead of trying to outdo The Dark Knight, were getting the chance to see Batman's fighting skills finally get put to the test.
Yeah, it will make for a less intelligent movie but I'm hoping Bane is given as much depth as he's given in the comics (resenting Batman, wanting to BE Batman, intelligent enough to figure out Batman's ID, kicking Alfred's ass, making Catwoman his bitch, conquering Gotham's underworld, his code of honor, etc.).
