When ovulation kicks into high gear, so does a woman's gaydar, a new study says. Researchers at the University of Toronto and Tufts University conducted a series of experiments and concluded that women at the peak of ovulation are better able to distinguish between straight men and gay men just by looking at their faces. "This suggests that fertility influences a heterosexual woman's attention to potential mates," said professor Nicholas Rule, lead author of the study, which is published online in Psychological Science. In the small-scale study, the researchers asked a group of heterosexual female undergrads to look at photos of men's faces -- half the photos were of straight men, the other half were of self-identified gay men -- and found that the nearer women were to peak ovulation, the more accurate they were at judging each male's sexual orientation. They conducted another experiment using photos of women's faces but said the same effect was "not apparent." "Together," Rule said, "these findings suggest that women's accuracy may vary across the fertility cycle because men's sexual orientation is relevant to conception and thus of greater importance as women are nearer to ovulation." |
