Forums - Sony - Sony out of warranty repair work

So my launch 60 GB unit fell to the dreaded YLOD about 2 weeks ago.  I have written a few emails back and forth with Sony support about getting it fixed but have not agreed to send it in and pay for service.  I'm just curious has any managed to get their out of warranty servcied without having to pay Sony the $129?  I'm kind of opposed to spending that kind of money on a unit I spent $600 dollars on already.  I know that may sound wrong, but I expect a quality product that will not break down for that much money.

129$ for a 60gb?! thats pretty cheap. sony charged me over that every time for mine. they ended up wanting like 300 for it get repaired after the fifth time it broke... so i told them to fuck off ....and then stupidly went and bought a slim (which has not broken however!)

i wouldnt get it repaired at sony though i dont think they dont repair it they give another one meanig all you HDD dat lost even if they give you the same one they wipe ur HDD

yes i had mine repaired w/o sony

go to knights gamming, capital circuits or gopher modes just google search them they save your HDD data and reball you GPU or CPU which is a better fix for ylod

I don't know what you are doing with your PS3's, man. I got a launch 60GB PS3 and a first generation 40GB PS3, none of them broke down even once, and they're used heavily. My friend also got a 60GB, and his is basically running 24/7, because he does Folding@Home, he only switches it off to play games. He never had any problems.

playing right now: Xenoblade Chronicles

Hype-o-meter, from least to most hyped:  the Last Story, Twisted Metal, Mass Effect 3, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Playstation ViTA

bet with Mordred11 that Rage will look better on Xbox 360.

I don't think i over work mine at all.  I'm lucky if I get to use it a few hours a week between watching movies and playing games.  It's kept in a well ventilated shelf by itself, and i dust it about once a week.  I was very surprised that it died.  I thought it was only over used units that weren't taken care of that get it.  I have a 120 downstairs in our bedroom that i haven't had any issues, and this is the first issue I've had with my 60, but it's a bad one.

Well let's see warranty is what 24 months ?
You had it for 4 years

Please explain it using logical arguments why any company should repair it free of charge ?

i don't know much about console repairs, but have you or anyboy ever tried taking a console to a PC repair shop?

i mean would that work?

Call me crazy but I don't have a problem expecting something I spent that much money on to last a good long while. My Sony receiver still works great, and that like 6 years old. My 5.5 year old Sony HDTV works great. I have tons of Power tools between 3 and 8 years old and they all still work. We spend $500 - $1200 on things like washers, dryers, and refrigerators and expect them to last 10+ years. Why should this be any different?
