So a bad thing happened to PSN recently. You may have heard about it. Given that it has ears everywhere, Microsoft also caught wind of Sony’s no good, very bad month. Make no mistake, however: the console-maker’s not popping any champagne bottles over its bitter rival’s darkest of hours.

“It’s bad for the industry that this has happened to Sony. It’s very, very bad. It’s very damaging. So we don’t wish that upon anybody and you’ve seen we’ve been actually pretty quiet on the subject because we don’t want to appear to even be looking to be taking advantage of somebody else’s situation like that. That’s just not in our DNA,” Xbox COO Dennis Durkin told IndustryGamers.

Of course, with the recent hackstravaganza that’s caught the gaming world with its pants down and orbiting another planet, Microsoft’s well aware of the fact that it could be next. But it’s certainly not going down without a fight – and, of course, hopefully not at all.

“[Xbox Live] is obviously very important to our consumers. It’s part of the value proposition of why consumers buy our gaming consoles… So they want that to be on just like you want your phone to be on. And so we have that obligation and we’ve been diligently, not only in terms of our processes, which we leverage heavily from the company, but just in terms of our people resource and all that so we do everything we can to protect our consumers’ data,” he explained.

“Like in society, you can’t always protect everything. There are people who are going to want to disrupt things and you can’t always perfectly protect against every scenario, but we’re going to make sure we do everything to we can to be sure we’re as secure as we possibly can be. And thankfully – I’m grateful to be part of a company like Microsoft, who has such deep investments across its whole ecosystem that we leverage. Because it’s an industry challenge and it’s something that we all have to get better at.”

May we suggest implementing a system similar to BioShock’s hacking minigames? Man, we hated those things.

Lol... I'm actually surprised nothing major happened to them yet.... then again out of the three they are the more likely to have the right contingency plans for an full on attack....

They probably figured talking crap would have made them next, good idea to stay quiet lol.

Microsoft is investing heavily in cloud computing so it really has to have its house in order if it is to protect company and private data. They will be launching Office 365 in just over a week and this will see them explode into this market and what it cannot afford is to suffer a breach anywhere remotely as serious as the one suffered by Sony as it would hurt not just its games division but its whole cloud vision.

To just give a flavour of this investment two years ago they were putting in 10,000 servers per month into its data centres and it has more now than then, I seem to remember they run on 15% load to allow for redundancy, serious investment.

I can't see a reason to keep speaking about this affair other than trolling. It was made a big deal out of nothing, there was a downtime for security reasons and nothing else. Citigroup (a BANK!!!) in the same period was violated and almost 400,000 accounts of credit card owners were stolen, none made a big deal about it. And Citigroup admitted this over a month after it happened, but we keep talking about Sony like it was something extraordinary. They keep talking about Sony, not about Citigroup and their MS servers, how smart. There was even a "succes story" on microsoft.com about Citigroup migrating to MS servers for their "New Digital Identity Solution". But yeah, at microsoft, they prefer to speak about Sony.

Stop feeding the trolls, stop reporting about this non-news.

yeah don't read.... Sony was a bigger deal because final consumer could actually see the consequences of the hack.... citigroup was seamless for the end user or at least less than the PSN being down....
especially since we are on a gaming forum.....
and like you said it was concerning only 400,000 user in the case of citigroup.... not millions like PSN.... and it was a big deal it was down for how many weeks again ???? yeah not a big deal.....
I see more a sony fan who doesn't want bad advertising for his team.... this is news worthy especially since the group that did it is still active today....

I read it. To sum it up what he said: "our service is good, remember the PSN outage". It doesn't matter if the words are condescending, it's an uncalled-for reference. And it's intentional.

Just can't say anything good about Microsoft.
