Forums - Gaming - PS3 following in the PSP's footsteps?

Hasn't the Wii and PS3 become the new DS vs PSP? Obviously the PSP is not a failure though it sucks the umd never took off and hopefully for the PS3 Blu-ray will. So will the PS3 follow in the footsteps of the PSP or will it eventually do better or could it get even worse then DS vs PSP ratios?  If we could keep the 360 out of this that would be great though I know it does matter for the sake of argument lets assume the 360 will be in 3rd place so how big will the gap be from 1st and 2nd comparing to the DS and PSP.

Unfortunately this is another one of those threads we discussed Sorair.

starcraft - Playing Games = FUN, Talking about Games = SERIOUS

I can see that comparison and good logic. The 2 Japanese giants both have some piece of cake of the market share. But Nintendo will always have the icing.

Well youve overlooked the fact that the PS3 has gameplay as well...

sales wise? maybe, but I don't really care

When it comes to software, no. The PS3 will do much better software wise then the PSP ever has

PS3 = hardcore gamers/traditional gamers
Wii = casual gamers/people that like mini games/people who are cheap

and Rol the wii doesnt have graphics atleast not up to current gen standards, 480i is LAST GEN.

But hey the wii does have some great mini games and my parents think it is really neat. Casual gamers are in heaven with that thing, you DONT have to be any good or even KNOW HOW TO PLAY to win at most of the best selling games.(Wii Play, Wii Sports, Mario & Sonic, Mario Party 8, Rayman 2) Now why would the games that require no brain power be such big sellers? because they are selling to a different demographic, thier intended demographic doesnt know how to play a video game. (kids & parents) So they took away the buttons and complex moves. They just made it so whoever shakes thier controller fastest or is just plain luckiest the winner. oh and they got mario (who was cool 15 years ago or still cool if you are under the age of 12)

The question is whether the Wii can continue like it is. If it can, then it could be the same non-battle, but I would expect Wii sales to fall and PS3 sales to increase

You can compare the differences any way you want. But comes down to two things.

1. Target: Audience: Wii/DS = Casual Market and main target is children - young adults; PSP/PS3 - Teenagers - Adult.

2. Price= Wii/DS is less expensive compared to PSP/PS3.

These factors have the most influence imo. Overall in quality PSP/PS3 wins hands down.

Also why is UMD a failure? Even if it other products don't use it. PSP is doing fine and as long as the psp is around it's here to stay. I like the steps Sony takes in trying to get products out there. I like the old Mini Disk idea and UMD is another cool format. Man, Even Betamax is still getting used by TV stations. Sony make some good quality shit :P

  Unleash The Beast!

End of 2011 Sales: Wii = 90mil, 360 = 61mil, PS3= 60mil

I think the comparison is sort of fair, but there are two major factors you overlooked:

Developers and publishers have pumped a huge amount of money and resources in the PS3 long before it launched and long before sales became uncertain, whereas the PSP (And DS) never got a proper amount of support until they'd proven themselves. This means the PS3's software line-up is going to be far more capable of selling units then the PSP's can ever hope too.

Anddddddddd, when a company make a PSP game, they're releasing it too a userbase who don't buy software in the slightest. PS3 software sales have been healthy when compared to their userbase size, and whatsmore any PS3 game can be released on the 360 too, so there is a huge amount of extra userbase that the PSP never had avaliable.

So er, what am I saying? Well basically, the Wii will beat the PS3 in sales, but it's not going to be the arse-whooping the DS gave the PSP, and the PS3's software catalogue is going to be leaps and bounds ahead of the PSP's when all is said and done. I'm unsure if the Wii can even hope to compete with it if I'm honest, albeit it's too soon to be making predictions like that.
