Thanks for this, I was waiting for someone to talk about the game since I'm interested in it. How much does the MC's assholishness affect your enjoyment of the game ? I have very low tolerance for main characters that I can't stand so I was wondering if I can get through this.

Hmm. Personally, it didn't bother me that much at all, but I quite enjoyed Okabe at the start of Steins;Gate too (while I know most people couldn't stand him). His whole personality and everything he's doing does seem incredibly mean-spirited, and he basically uses all the other characters in the game to get what he wants.
With that said, I found that the overall journey/story was worth persevering (even if the ending were a letdown). It's a strange game, it's very laid back and most of the time is just spent ambling round rural Japan thinking about things and occassionally talking to people. Reminds me of how I imagined Fuuraiki being, except there are moments of excitement whenever you're interrogating her classmates.
I'd definitely recommend it. Maybe not for full price, but it's worth playing. Anything else you want to know, feel free to just ask.
