The big problem for reviewers' and the general public's perception of the Vita is that two years in Sony is still just throwing out these kinds of ports that would have been fine as stop gaps for that barren first year or to fill out an empty spot in an otherwise robust release calendar, but which seem instead to make up the bulk of their first party efforts on their own handheld. The next time some Sony guy mentions how it's hard to get third parties to invest in the Vita, the interviewer should remind him of the fact that Sony doesn't invest in it, either.


I totally get what you are saying. But then when there is a Vita release that is exclusive (see Killzone) the reviews then all bemoan that fact they would rather play it on a home console. You don't see that for 3DS reviews. It's taken as a handheld title and left at that.

I didn't read many reviews for Killzone, so that may be true, but I do remember IGN raving about how it was the first great handheld FPS and Eurogamer being slightly cooler to it for other reasons while still praising quite effusively what it accomplished as a handheld shooter. So the impression I got was actually the opposite: as a console title it would have been merely passable, but as a handheld one it was something special.

That aside, if there is indeed a point where a handheld game can be so close to yet so far from console quality that it turns people off - a sort of qualitative uncanny valley - then it's a bad strategy for Sony to keep hanging their hat on that kind of thing instead of things like Tearaway*. And even if there is, a quick glance at Metacritic's highest rated 3DS and Vita games doesn't indicate that reviewers have been unduly harsher to the Vita on balance. I think the Vita's troubles are less about reviewers dislike of it and more about Sony's own apparent disinterest in it.

Well, Killzone is in a strange situation... Killzone: Mercenaries is surely a Vita exclusive in itself... But I guess that the average reviewer will tend to make comparisons with his or her own "platonic idea" of Killzone, so to say, which is an abstract mix of the three Playstation games... hence the drama starts again, and you already wrote the conclusion, in fact: "they would rather" blah blah blah...

My point is that Vita should have her own quality games. Inferior console ports, HD versions of classics, indies, akiba stuff are all welcome, but they should be the contour of an already solid library, not the core games. I think that Gravity Rush, for how much glitchy and experimental, was a step in the right direction.

I agree that reviewers are biased, in fact I've stopped reading reviews since long time, but what's happeing on Vita at software level is partly legitimating their lack of neutrality.

Sly 1 is a easy platnum, you don't even have to 100% the game to plat lol.

But then, there's an extra hour or so of battery, a more responsive buttons as i've been told, a thinner and lighter model, plus an internal 1Gb of storage which is heaven for people going Physical Only. But there's that gorgeous OLED on the other hand, I wish someone with both versions could enlighten us more about it and give a definitive (personal) verdict.

Well, you have all relevant information, so it's up to you to choose between the screen and other features.

I have OLED version, and don't plan to switch, but if I were choosing now, the decisive feature would be MicroUSB charging. I hate this proprietary charger, just takes up outlet space, with the new one I would be able to use my existing phone/DS4 charger...



The battery life on Vita isn't too bad. If you have a 3DS the OLED has a better battery life and also depletes much more slowly in sleep mode.

Just do t go expecting GBA/DS battery life and you should be fine with either model. If battery life is an issue due to lack of access to a charger. You can buy a Portable charger which will give you an extra 1.5-2x battery life without needing a wall socket.

Quit yer moanin'!  I don't even care about trophies, I was just amused that they're being thrown at me in this game :P
