23 dollars? Mmm... I was expecting it to be $19.99, but it still is a good price!

The fact that some of its games are also on PS3/4 means little because you can't play those without impunity anywhere like on Vita. If you think you will enjoy it more on PS3/4, get it on that but you could also choose to have the freedom of portability. Also Vita is the last console that can be criticized about variety. Killzone Mercs, Borderlands 2, MLB 14:The Show, MGS Collection, Sly Collection, Jak Collection, God of War Collections, AC: Liberations, LBP Vita, Unit 13, PSASBR, Super Stardust Delta, Tearaway are western themed games. They aren't Japanese style at all. How many games in that vein does 3DS have? two(MGS 3D, Resident Evil Revelations)? All of it's most reveled games are Japanese at their core(Pokemon, Fire Emblem, Yoshi, Zelda, Mario, Animal Crossing, Smash Bros, Mario Kart). So Sony alone is ushering in handheld games designed by a Western Market. For every other front Sony has created equal opposition to what 3DS offers. Zelda = Y's:Memories of Celceta SMT4 = Persona 4 Golden Monster Hunter = Soul Sacrifice, Freedom Wars, Ragnarok Odyssey Prof Layton/Ace Attorney= Dangan Ronpa, Jacob Jones Kid Icarus = Gravity Rush Mario Kart = Modnation, Wipeout Fire Emblem = FFX/X-2 HD 3D Function(many don't like it's use) = Back Touch (not really used) |
Sony is Japanese though. ;)
Btw Fire emblem = FFX, is a bit of a strech. ^^

Pick one or the other; but it can't be both. Either it has games, or it doesn't have games. |
Its all so confusing Kresnik. Do we go with what people say or with logic?! *Critical processing error*
This was a strange, strange post. To address it point by point:

At this point in time, I think Vita has been a shining example of how the vast, vast majority of the market don't care about "but you can play it anywhere on a handheld!" Phones & tablets satisfy the need for adult gamers to play on the go. Phones; tablets & 3DS' satisfy the need for younger games to play on the go. The fact that Sony have increasingly targeted the latter as time goes on (i.e. last year's "summer" advertising campaign; putting money into stuff like PS Vita Pets this year) shows that they recognise that market is all that's left for them at this point. If they can get a few western otaku's and cross-buy-indie-game fans on board too, then that's great, but they can't be a particularly sustainable or large market.

Nintendo's franchises have universal appeal. You don't look at something like Mario or Zelda and think "this is a real Japanese-culture title". But certainly with a lot of the Vita stuff we've been getting - from Conception to to Deception to Demon Gaze to Freedom Wars, there is a massive eastern influence. Primarily, because these games were designed to sell in Japan first and the rest of the world second. I can't think of a single Japanese-developed Sony IP that isn't focused on the Japanese market first, save for Gran Turismo. Conversely, Nintendo's games sell well in the Japanese market and have big overseas appeal to either children or long-time fans of the franchises.
There's nothing wrong with people disliking strongly-Japanese influenced games. Heck, the first time I played Yakuza I found it very hard to adjust to how differently the game world felt to me - it was on the borderline of being completely alien.
Also, your list of western games kinda highlights how sad things are for the Vita at the moment. And don't get me wrong - I am one of the small minority that actually loves that Vita is getting all these HD Collections of games I adored on PS2. But like I said, people like me are a tiny minority. For most people, that will be a list of games which they played on the PS2 or PS3 or would prefer to play on the PS2 or PS3. Which comes back to my first point of "but it's a handheld!" not being a selling point for many. When you're selling your console on the strengths of Killzone; Unit 13; LittleBigPlanet & Tearaway then there's a problem, no matter how good the games might actually be.

I find there to be some baffling comparisons in here. FFX & Persona 4 are both mostly traditional JRPG's with turn-based battle systems, yet one is comparable to a first person dungeon crawler and the other is comparable to a SRPG? Kid Icarus, a third person rail shooter gets compared to Gravity Rush, an open world action-adventure game?
As for the rest of them, again, for the vast majority of the market they would see a list like this and think that Vita is just getting inferior versions of games they could play on the 3DS. Why buy a Vita to play Modnation when you can get the superior Mario Kart on 3DS? In some cases it's unfair - Ys deserves much more recognition than it gets and I genuinely think it's better than Zelda for my own personal tastes, but that's just how the market goes.
You should all know how much I love Vita but I don't think making yourself feel better about the situation by drawing odd comparisons and making the console seem like it's getting better support than it's getting is making the situation any better. If all your points were true and Sony's IP's could go toe-to-toe with Nintendo's; and it had a vast library of quality western titles, then why is it selling so badly in America? Yes, advertising, but even lack of advertising doesn't excuse 10k in a whole month.

*that more than 10 people care about and isn't a very late port. As far as games are concerned its a C-grade system and nobody buys a system for C-grade games. How many of those games you do think will break even 100k in the west? Says everything for their appeal. |
Haven't a good chunk of them already cracked 100k? :P
Though yeah, "no games" is now the wrong argument. Hell even "no good games" is the wrong argument. "no blockbuster games" is the issues.
I can't tell you because we have no reliable stat tracking data for Vita.
I'd be surprised if FFX/X2 hasn't. Dead Nation will have done by default,
Tecmo were happy with Toukden's performance. Though don't know what their expectations were. Destiny of Spirits did, I'm sure Soul Sacrifice Delta will. Danganronpa sold out most places so that might have done.
Again, without any real stats I can't say. But I think a fair few of that list will exceed 100k lifetime (considering a few of them aren't even out yet).
However I still agree with the point you were making, even if a game has a large appeal to Vita owners, it doesn't appeal to non Vita owners to a point where they'll buy a Vita.

Does Sony have a target audience to begin with? Because I'm pretty sure in the west they don't. It's not the same as Smartphones/tablets and the 3DS.
Right now Vita owners are really hardcore Playstation fans or gamers who just love Japanese games. Therefore, that's one of the reasons the Vita is selling so bad in the west, especially in the US. Western consumers prefer generic shooters (Call of Duty, Battlefield, Titanfall), action games (Assassin's Creed, Infamous), sandboxes (GTA, Saints Raw) wrpg's (Skyrim, Mass Effect, Dragon Age), and so on.
Vita has, I think, just a couple of them, so I don't really think that right now it's attractive enough to the self proclamed "hardcore gamers."

So April was a sick month for you! xD
Save some of them for E3!

I said there would be a lot of localizations happening, and it's still April... You guys can thank the Japanese government for some of these projects going through. I'll just call it "cultural expansion" and leave it at that.

I keep not playing Atelier Totori for ages and then when I come back to it I have an absolute blast.
Well, at least it's always a nice surprise this way.
