It is pretty bizarre. Granted, the market may be more tumultuous now and it is likely that they have run into unexpected resistance with third parties due to skepticism of the very idea of a dedicated handheld gaming device, but I don't believe at all that it had to be this way. If they had gotten most of the big PSP supporters to commit to just one major game each we'd be looking at a very different situation. Instead they sat idle while third parties didn't make games for the system, so the system sells at a diminished rate, so third parties are convinced they were right not to make games in the first place: a classic self-fulfilling prophecy.

Agreed, hopefully the situation will change at E3 2014 cuz this is starting to look rediculous for the vita.

Upcoming notable indies for PS Vita:
I love remote play but Fuck that Guy talking about Call of duty Ghosts on vita. Sony hasn't announced any first party games for the vita in the west for 2014. At this point I don't think there are any games coming from the western side. The saddest thing is that Sony didn't even try to make the vita a success in the west.
In Japan SCEJ had constant bundles, a price cut, several ads over the year and marketing pushes for Soul Sacrifice, phantasy star and God Eater 2. What did they do in the west ? They just put out titles to die without any marketing and no price cut. I guess the vita will remain my import machine till the end of the gen.
@krensik : I don't think Sony had any involvement in recent localization announcements. I think it's more localization companies snatching titles before Sony third party team. It's more of indirect effect for Sony wanting to get japanese titles localized, but I don't give Sony any credit for it.

yeah I mean with all the disadvantages of this gen they also have advantages like remote play being much better thanks to better hardware. Few system sellers could have done wonders...hell half of psp's sales would still be pretty great! This fucking company....they make that QOL stuff from Iwata look amazing..I mean at least that's a plan.
@chase: I don't expect anything. They had a bad E3 in 2012 and actually managed to have an even worse one last year. This year they might skip the vita section altogether and announce 10 more new games to ps3 and i still wouldn't be surprised
@Nesfe: agreed. I mean hell even SCEE is trying some stuff...scea is like what is a vita? Can you eat it?!

SCEA absolutely sucks in marketing the vita! They don't even want to try to show it some attention.

If that was the case, they could have at least some interest about it. I'm sure they think a PSV is a STD, so they avoid it all costs.

marketing AND support...pretty sure they have not put any exclusives on the system since mid 2012!

Well, by that token "Vita is a really expensive PS4 controller!" is also a plan.
We will have to wait for specifics, but at first blush it sounds like the idea is to divorce Nintendo's gaming line from their lifestyle software like Wii Fit and Brain Age. That sounds like it would only exacerbate their existing problems. I mean, if you take the Wii U's already small install base and subtract the people who want Wii Fit and the like, then it's obviously just that much smaller than before. Where does that get them, exactly? Maybe they'll conjure up some Nintendo magic, but this seems like it will just be more direct competitor to phones and tablets than what they already offer, so it will just fail that much harder.
| badgenome said: The most frustrating thing is that it's a market that does still exist. The 3DS is doing well enough to show that it does, and the Vita is not so much more expensive as to explain the disparity in sales. As much as they like to tell themselves that, oh noez the smartphoanz ate that market, Sony launched the Vita with nothing that could reasonably have been expected to shift hardware at any point in time. The PSP would have struggled with this line-up. Uncharted and Gravity Rush were the closest things to system sellers they had for the launch window, and then... nothing. And they had to know that there was nothing. They couldn't have been blindsided by Monster Hunter 4 being 3DS bound and there being no Metal Gear nor Grand Theft Auto nor Final Fantasy on the way. And now that the Vita is coming up on its second year of dismal worldwide sales, the thing has the stink of failure on it to the point that there will be no Metal Gear nor GTA nor Final Fantasy nor any other substantial third party investments ever without heavy incentives from Sony themselves. |
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that things couldn't be better for Vita had they put more effort in - I think that's absolutely true. What I'm saying is, for the amount of effort/resources/time they could put in, the proportional gains they would get wouldn't be big enough. If they threw everything they could realistically get at the device next year - Gran Turismo; God of War; InFAMOUS; Type-0 HD; Ac!d 3 and let's say something 'new' to handhelds like a new Elder Scrolls, I still don't think the ultimate fate of the device would change.
Sony are targeting home console gamers with this console. Home console gamers game on home consoles. Nintendo fans game on handhelds and home consoles because they've had 4 generations of being conditioned that that's what they should do if they want to experience the best of what Nintendo have to offer. Sony have been conditioning people for a generation and a bit, and even most of that was ignored by then aside from a period around launch and another period around 2009.
Things could be better; but I don't think things could ever be "fixed" in the west because the market has changed. It's easy to pass the blame to Sony because they haven't done anything for the device rather than say "it's smartphones"; but I think both of the factors are the reason it's in this state today.
And that's why all I want them to do is cater to the fanbase which is here with appropriately-budgeted titles that at least keep the device ticking along. But apparently Yoshida's incompetence at managing release schedules (the more I look at the speight of 2013 PS3 releases, the more it makes me angry) means that every_single_person in SCE WWS has to rush to get a PS4 title out of the door. Which is absurd, but there you go.
