Forums - General - I am Legend movie/book comparison. *SPOILERS*

So, I read the book then watched the film. The book I enjoyed, the film on the otherhand-WTF?

Did they just take the name of the book and the lead character and then just make some shit up? It has got to be THE worst book to film conversion ever. Now I know you have to make allowances and lose certain parts to fit it into a couple of hours, but apart from some vampires, a man called Robert Neville and the title, they have nothing else in common.

There is no vampire hunting, no Ben Cortman and no Ruth. The worst part is, they have missed the whole point of the book. It's supposed to be about 1 man's transition from victim to monster, instead it's about 1 man's trasition from hero to marter.

YES someone who agrees with me on this. For your viewing pleasure may I reccommend "The Last man on Earth" with Vincent Price. IMO it is the closest to the book even he is still a scientist and not a person who learned science. Both the Omega Man and Last Man on Earth have him killed in the end but Omega man is closer to the New Movie.

I actually liked the movie. I didn't even know that this was based off of a book. I think it wasn't "earth-shattering" but it was ten bucks (Don't get me started) well spent.

Saw it today, it was good, not great but good, worth the price of admission.

Wow $10 bucks I remember a time when you could see films for $3

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

I thought the book was better, but the variations made in the film were essential to update the story to a more mass audience. Either way I enjoyed the film

but I hated the whole him being a superhero doctor, in the book he was nothing like that, he was a regular guy who became the monster.

also bob marley was a bad choice, they should have stuck with jazz

Well said.

I enjoyed the book even though I didn't really like the ending.  But just because it wasn't a "happily ever after" story didn't make it bad to me, as I got the point of it.

I enjoyed the movie too, but mostly for the bond between a man and his dog.  I also had to think of the movie as an unrelated project rather than bringing the book to life.  I won't even give it the vampire link as their only weakness shown was UV light, but they could be killed with guns.  I realize the story was modernized to draw a crowd, but the number of drastic changes made was quite disappointing.  It would have been better off with a different title and main character in my opinion.

All that said "I think.. it was ten bucks (Don't get me started either) well spent" as well.  I'll surely never watch it again though.

^ yeah I thought the relationship with Sam ( the dog in the film) was better than the dog in the book which only last a week if I remember

Hmm, I didn't really like it. Quite boring, actually. Haven't read the book, but it sounds much more interesting. I just thought the film was a weaker, simpler, more boring version of 28 days later, which I did enjoy watching. :p

 2008 Predictions:

Wii: 44 Million
Xbox360: 25 Million
PS3: 22 Million

DS: 90 Million
PSP: 37 Million

Saw it and I liked it. Saw Omega Man too. Been meaning to read the book.
