Because most people are used to CoD and Halo and the like.
Time for hype
In my opinion, I don't believe it is a hard game but I can see why most people THINK it is a hard game.
It is not a hard game to me because, as many others have pointed out, the majority of the monsters/levels are all easily beaten if you know what attacks the enemy does and what they're weaknesses are. Granted, to get that knowledge you have to die a few times :)
Why I think some people think the game is difficult is the "no checkpoint and all monsters respawn" aspect. They think "it took me 30 minutes to get to this location and now I have to do it ALL over again!?!?". I guess they don't take into account new info learned (or fail learn from their deaths). If you do take into account and learn, it only takes a fraction of time to get to the point again.
I also think people believe it is difficult due to the fact that certain armors/weapons are better against certain enemies as most gamers don't like to think about the situation and like to just use the same equipment, always. I also don't think people like that the fact that most enemies can kill you in DS in 2-3 hits though, if you pay attention, you shouldn't really be getting hit too much.
I mean, I can run through the whole game with < 25% health (so I can use the...rat's ring or whatever to drastically increase damage) and not die more than a few times. It's not THAT difficult outside of a few bosses (man eaters...I'm looking at you).

Damn those man eaters....

haven't played demon souls, but i did see a lot of comparison to witcher 2's difficulty with demon souls.
and if that is the case then i woudl have to say it is NOT hard. I watched videos of peopel that bitched about witcher 2 being TOO hard and they were just HORRIBLE. It was not the game being hard it was just them being BAD.
I mean one guy would run into a mob of 6 guards and just start swinging away with sword. Then when enemies surround him he starts yelling and pissed that they are ATTACKING him at the same time, and ganging up on him. or he bitches about enemies BLOCKING and then COUNTERING his attacks, saying that isn't fair. Or when he is running away from said enemy he yells "quit chasing me"
its like SERIOUSLY. its almost like he wants absolutely 0 AI in the enemies. just wants them to stand there and let him fight one on one like in assassins creed

The fake king was the only tough opponent, IMO...
Maneater was easy for me... mainly because because of the Blessed Mirdan Hammer, I killed him so quickly that the other one didn't manage to jump in. That weapon is CHEATING.

Meh they're both easy really, but if there was a hard one I'd have to go with those damn man eaters, damn them

I guess I wasn't into it as much as you were :) I never used that weapon against them. I mainly did it without dying too much with my normal steel...uh..damn, I've forgotten the weapon. It was a dagger :) I didn't find the man-eaters that hard as a concept it was more of the fact that you fought on the platform. 70% of my deaths in the game were being knocked off the damn platform by the man eaters

I think the "hardest" boss was Flamelurker, mainly because once you got him down to low health, he'd go insane with his fist explosions (Where he slams his hands to the floor and the big boom comes, lol...) and used two and three of them in a row so you were stunlocked taking tons of damage... I found Maneaters to be pretty easy, and all I used was a Winged Spear 2 the first time I fought them, whereas now I'm using a Blueblood Sword, not fully upgraded since I hear it's insanely strong if you have 99 Faith and Luck... but I can kill them both pretty easy without taking any damage, infact, sometimes I've gone into Hypermode (<30% Health, Morion Blade, Clever Rats Ring, and Cursed Weapon) and a Dragon Bone Smasher 5, I basically two hit both of them, lol... |
Whoa, good stuff, it's cool to hear someone brag about their demon's souls prowess, not to brag but I used a hiltless (with 60 dexterity) also an istarelle and large sword of moonlight.
Faith/ dexterity FTW!
Soul level of 290(possibly higher I forgot)

I pretty much used the sharp secret dagger through my initial 2 play throughs combined a little bit with the sticky CLB. I could have made it easier on myself (man eaters and flame lurker are tougher with no magic damage) but I felt like having fun. Rolling and stabbing people in the back was too fun :)
I definitely didn't think the game was that difficult.
The boss AI all have some trick to them that makes it easy to beat, as long as you hold up your shield and use magic or arrows the game is really easy.. I beat most of the game in soul form, simply because fall damage gets taken away and I like that better than human form.
It does make you pay attention however, you need to try to actually block instead of just swinging your sword around like an idiot.
After beating the game and replaying through, I think the difficult definitlely jumps a lot though, and can get "difficult"
