Forums - Microsoft - First Gears of War 3 Campaign Trailer Now Live

For Gears this is a weak trailer. The choice of music was poor IMO. Look at the madworld trailer for Gears of War 1 and then watch this and you will see what I am talking about. This game is likely going to recieve a monsterous marketing budget so I am certain that later ads will be much better

Graphics = Underwhelming, seriously falling behind from what used to be such a graphical powerhouse of GoW1. And this is with an extra 6 months in polishing.

Gameplay on the otherhand is already a 10/10 just due to the fact that it'll be slightly more paced than Gears 2.

This is just the beta and the retail campaign in full will look lot better.

That looks really nice I know, and no...it won't look 'alot' better in fact it'll look practically the same. I've already seen the trailer in the original post and those graphics are final so I and everyone else who has seen that trailer know what to expect.

That aside, the textures do look really good, kind of artsy but not realistic. When you look at these screenshots you can tell very easily that it's a video game and that's because everything looks like it's made out of clay, especially the characters. Honestly, fast forward the trailer in the OP to :25 and look at the guys face (best example I could find), it's underwhelming I'm sorry that's just my opinion.

The majoirty disagrees with you and Brenden and since when was Gears ever about realism anyway?

My name isn't Brenden >.<!

And I think people are too caught up in the hype. I haven't played a Gears game so I was hoping that would make my opinion on the graphics would be more credible because I'm not caught up in the hype, or it could make me less credible because I can't appreciate the art design, I don't know.

Either way, I'll judge when the full game comes out and I have it on my big screen downstairs.

^^^

Even then, I'm not sure how much you'll dig Gears 3.  There's a bundle that features Gears 1 & 2 plus all of the DLC for about $30 or less, though.  You should check them out.  I think they aged pretty well but you'll have to judge for yourself.

Unrelated rant:

Imagine you're a fan of Star Wars.  The first movie in the series is hailed for its cutting edge special effects.  You really enjoy it.  Partly for the special effects, partly for the action, partly for the characters or what have you.  Now, by the time the latest movie comes out, the special effects are still awesome but not as unique.  Some movies have caught up to--or even surpassed the series in the special effects department.  Suddenly, you see a trailer for the long anticipated final chapter.  You're hyped!  You can't wait to see how it's all going to play out.

But while you're excited about the story, the characters, the special effects, the action, and whatever unexpected surprises you may have in store, people that never watched/liked the movie say things like:  "The series sucks.  Indiana Jones has better special effects.", "That's stupid.  It's just about a bunch of kids with space ships."

Well, that's the kind of predicament that Gears 3 finds itself in.  People think it's all about the graphics and mindless muscle heads shooting guns.  There's more to it than that.  That's why we're excited.

I think I'll probably like Gears. I might seem like a shooter hater but I'm really not, I just hate poorly made shooters or shooters that have nothing else to them other than...shooting...basically.

Gears looks fun, I have always preferred 3rd person over 1st person and I have heard many great things about the online co-op. While it does look fun, I'm not expecting it to blow me away outside of the gameplay aspect for the same reason you posted in your comment, "People think it's all about the graphics and mindless muscle heads shooting guns".

While I don't think it will ALL be about that, Gears doesn't seem like it has that much depth or a strong story, something that makes the game more immersive. Does Gears have much to offer outside of the gameplay aspect?

Anyway, I will pick up Gears 1 2 ASAP after I have finished some of my other games.

I agree about your "unrelated rant" part aswell, there is always someone to piss on the bonfire, best just to ignore them.

That's very true. MGS4 does seem very flat at times, the framerate is jarry and there are a lot of low res textures. But there are times in the game where everything is perfect, the lighting, the textures and the framerate, it's in these moments that I think MGS4 is one of if not THE best looking game this generation.

And you are right, the beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I think MGS4 looks better than Gears of War 2 AND Uncharted 2, I think Killzone 2 looks better than Killzone 3, I think Crysis 2's graphics are mediocre and I think Final Fantasy XIII is one of the best looking games this generation. There are too many factors that make a game look great, including art design and personal preference.

You know I think (unless I'm seeing it from rose tinted spectacles- need to check) that Uncharted 1 is still one of the best if not the best looking game this gen to this day even better then UC2 in some ways. The only thing really letting it down by nowadays standards is the screen tear. I really like sharp, clean and crisp textures, detalied foliage, destructible environments, smooth gameplay and lots of colour and for me UC1 had that in spades. As much as I like MLAA, I really wish the blur wasn't there. I know I'm nitpicking and it's nowhere near QAA but for me even that slight blur just smudges some of the beauty out of it.

Very true, I don't think there is a big difference between Uncharted 1 and Uncharted 2, nowhere near as big as people are making it out to be anyway.

I never seem to notice screen tear, I'm not quite sure what it actually looks like or what I'm supposed to look for.

I also like sharp and colourful graphics, but I can't tell the difference between MLAA and MSAA. I can't see that "blur" that you are referring to.

Do you have any screenshots which show the blurring?

The majority disagrees with me and brendude, huh? Thanks for the thread summary 'tips'. As with every majority there is a minority who see things differently but as far as I'm concerned the graphics are great, not INSANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And the reason being is we're used to the graphics in UC2, God of War 3 and MGS4 which are 2, 1 and 3 years old respectively. So in order for Gears 3 to be INSANE!!!!!! it would have to be much better than UC2 and IMHO it doesn't if at all look any better than UC2, and that's with UC3 coming out around the same time as GoW3.

My sole gripe is the influx of people who just can't help but go out of their way to try and attack something that people love.  I find myself doing it, too.  Lately, I've been able to find a little bit of self restraing (not all the time) and just not post anything if I don't have anything good to say.

I mean, look at the "Gears of War 3 Campaign Trailer" article on gamrFeed (not sure if it's on the front page, anymore.).  One guy made the comment "Compare it to the Killzone 3 Story trailer.  Not even close! LOL!" or something like that.  Why would 360 owners looking at a glimpse of the campaign of the most anticipated game of the year for that system care about a PS3 exclusive FPS?  What did a comment like that have to do with anything?

I'll let it be.  It's just that Gears is probably in my top 3 franchises this gen.  It provided me with too many good times and I have a hard time sitting idely by while people try to trash it.

I assume you mean me when you say 'trash it' since you didn't bring this up until you semi responded to what I had originally said.

First off, I'm not a hater and neither are most people out there. Most people who play gears absolutely love it, I know I do or I wouldn't have every achievement in Gears 1 and most in Gears 2. I'm not a hater just because I say gears looks good, I'm not a hater because your offended by my means of opinion on the graphics. I simply stated that the graphics weren't up to par with other games already out.

But this topic is getting off-topic and I don't want to start disputes over opinions so...

Games on the PS3 that use MLAA or something similar are GOWIII, KZ3, LBP2, DA2, The Saboteur, SWTFUII...can't think of any others. If you play any of those games especially the ones that actually use MLAA (such as GOWIII and KZ3) you can see a slight blur. Again I have to stress I'm nit picking and it's amazing the PS3 can do this but I prefer 8xMSAA (top end PC only) which is as sharp but without the blur thus the textures retain that sharpness that I really like. Of course MLAA is better than no AA or 2 or 4 x MSAA but wish it had no blur though I have to say the edge smoothing in GOWIII is amazing.

If you can't see screen tear, good for you don't try and look for it cause once you can spot it once, you'll be able to spot it all the time. Some games have screen tear at the very top of the screen which you won't notice.
