Forums - Sales - American Softare is Up

The PS3 has almost exactly 1/3 the hardware sales in the US as the 360. (3.3M vs 10M) And it sold almost exactly 1/3 the software last week. Shocking, i tell you. Shocking!

Yeah, I don't know where they got that 942,000 number from.  If you add up the PS3 software sales in the top fifty, you get around 280,000.  The lowest selling game on the list sold 40,000 units.  So assume that every other PS3 game sold 40,000 units.  It would take over 15 games selling that much to get the numbers right.  Somethings got to be wrong with that figure.  I can't even think of 15 PS3 games.  Plus, the chances that they all would see exactly 40,000 is slim-to-none.  It would probably take 20 games selling at varying levels.

Beats me.

My End of 2008 Hardware Predictions (console only):

Wii : 50 million

360: 28 million

PS3: 24 million

These predictions were made on January 3rd and won't be revised

i don't know..i honestly expected sw sales (for wii/x360/ps3: i mean for EACH platform) to be higher than this...it's christmas week and apart from bundled games sw sales went up only 20%? no christmas gifts this year? :)

It's more like 25 percent, but it's 25 percent over the SECOND busiest week of the year, which was last week. Compare it to something like this typical mid year week:

http://www.vgchartz.com/aweekly.php?date=39131&console=&maker=&boxartz=3

It's about a 450 percent increase (or 5.5x), so this is quite strong.

Software sales have been going up the last 4-5 weeks by 10-20% per week, it's a cumulative thing

Wii sells most software for the first time in a while in America, despite having a lower install base, and even accounting for Wii Sports (and Forza/Marvel:UA).

Now that we have a complete picture of the worldwide weekly sales, the Wii sold over 2 million more software units than the 360 and more than 3 million more software units than the PS3 (Again, even accounting for Wii Sports/UA/Forza).

Even if Ioi has made some serious errors, and even if those errors universally favor the Wii, it looks very likely that the Wii outsold the PS3/360 in terms of software by a considerable margin in the busiest week of the year. If you look at earlier weeks in the year:

http://vgchartz.com/weekly.php?date=39250&console=&maker=&boxartz=3
http://vgchartz.com/weekly.php?date=39152&console=&maker=&boxartz=3

You'll see that this week is equivalent to about 2 months worth of software sales from the earlier months of the year. It's extremely critical to sell software at this time of year, and the Wii is doing in spades. I think it's time to put the "Wii doesn't sell software" debate to rest.

I have a feeling rockband is going to destroy the vgcharts figure come npd, considering how many copies my own family obtained during this period. Guess we'll find out.
