Forums - Nintendo - 3DS vs DS??? Huh?

Honestly, imo I don't believe the 3DS is doing bad. And I do believe it will start to pick up when the killer apps or "best" games start to roll out. BUT the 3DS is backwards compatible. So this raises many to think that who is to blame for people not knowing that? NINTENDO shall take that blame. I understand some people out there don't want to spend $250 right away but some people might think well, theres not many games on the 3DS right now and there are still DS games I want to play, sooo I'm going to buy a DS.

NINTENDO, the DS is still selling very well. Honestly, the market that you're selling the 3DS too, are the same people that are buying the DS! The only way you're going to get them to convert is 1. Heavily advertise the 3DS and let people know about backwards compatibility and  2. Start to kill off the DS or just completely kill it off so the people are forced to buy 3DS's.

Any comments?

They already started killing the DS, discontinuing the Lite model. Anyway fro Nintendo it's important to push 3DS life, not its short term sales, as long as 3DS DS sales are as big as DS when was their only portable the situation is fine. Looking at DS in EU or Americas after its launch we can see that 3DS is doing the same, the main difference is Japan but there the DS was launched during the holidays. The second wave of games is coming, this will be a better indicator of 3DS' situation.

CURRENTLY PLAYING: Xenoblade (Wii), Super mario 3D land (3DS), Guild Wars (PC)

They are making more profit per unit sold selling the DS over the 3DS, I think?

Plus, Nintendo isn't pushing the 3DS as much as they did for the Wii. Maybe they intented for the slower start?

And finally, 3DS haz no gamz.

yeah I think alot of people just think the 3ds is just DS with 3D.  the name is one reason that is to blame .

True. And then again E3 is just right around the corner so maybe they have announcements to make.

Plus they look almost identical lol. Maybe Nintendo needs to actually start highlighting the differences in the commercials, analog stick, 3D cameras, software differences etc . . .

Just like the PS3 didn't kill off PS2 sales, the 3DS would should not be expected to kill off DS sales. Those currently buying a DS right now are doing so because of the great value for money that the system represents. These may be consumers that dont keep up to date with their console news, and are not particularly concerned with getting the newest hardware, or it may be multi console owners who are just finally getting round to playing DS games.

backwards compatability is not as big a hardware seller as most people on VGChartz think it is.

omg! Beuli's prophecy came TRUE!! :-O

I think 3DS is more profitable, doesn't cost that much more to make yet it's about 2x the price

Maybe they learned from what happened with the Wii... If they had priced the Wii a bit higher, they could have taken advantage of the high demand, then dropped price later if needed (I remember Pachter saying something along those lines a while back lol)

I haven't bought one yet(and I'm an N fan) - waiting for gamz and/or a model with better battery

It's easy to criticise Nintendo after the fact that the Wii sold gangbuster.

Remember that Nintendo took a huge risk going completely different route with the Wii and it may have bombed.
