Sony develops “SmartAR” Integrated Augmented Reality technology
- Featured with markerless and high-speed object recognition & tracking as well as
dynamic 3D space recognition & image rendering -

Sony has developed integrated ‘Augmented Reality (hereafter referred to as ‘AR’) technology’ called as “Smart AR.” When capturing visuals through a camera on a device such as a smartphone, the technology enables additional information to be displayed on the device’s screens such as virtual objects, or images and texts that cannot be identified by visual perception alone. The technology employs the markerless approach, forgoing any requirement for special markers such as 2D barcodes. The object captured by the camera is quickly recognized and can be tracked at high-speed along with the movement of the camera, as it is displayed over the actual 3D space.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

No surprises here sony has been experimenting with ar for years now. At least since the eye toy around a decade ago, but its funny to see some people say sometimes that, for example, the ar games in the 3ds are a completely new concept which nintendo came up with, when sony has been dealing with thios stuff for years now.

These days, it's whoever can bring something to the main stream that counts since anything with a camera with the right software can scan codes.

I think this tecnology is gonna be present in the NGP, since they demonstrated something like that; only instead of the bear they scanned a Ape Escape box art and got one of the monkeys :D

Good stuff, can't wait to see what they do with NGP and AR.
