Forums - Sony - I understand Xbox 360, but why is the PS3 doing so lousy in Japan?

What's the Japanese holiday? It's not Christmas...

as strange as it may sound it's still the biggest week of the year over there even if they're not Christian.

2008 year end sales (made in January 2008):

Japanese do celebrate Christmas, just without all the religious aspects. They still give gifts, have Santa Claus, etc.

But yeah, the size of the unit is a big issue. Look what happened with the PSP (hardware) when they released a slimmer version.

Edit:  Also hardcore gaming is dying in Japan.  People born in the 90s are rebelling against people born in the 70s and 80s and going for casual/non games.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

Oh Eugene. Price, Japanese centric games, etc. It is doing ok.

And alex, you be surprised are wrong you are.

And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

I think the size of the console is a mute point. I would think having enough room to flail your arms around would matter more.

@eugene..

Low PS3 sales are due to a fundamental shift in the key demographic coupled with the overall crumminess of the PS3.

My opinion is that the fanbase & general public are taking the "dont buy the PS3 untill the big games out"-approach. That, and the Wii price is probably a good factor aswell.

More than likely we won't see people buying more PS3's untill the likes of MGS4 makes a dive, and finally gets released.

But I also believe that its due to the hardcore base being split into the 360 supporters and PS3 supporters. If that crowd merged, the sales would be strong.

 Consoles: Wii & PS3.

I don't think the PS3 is selling poorly in Japan (especially when you consider the price). It's just not selling as well as the Wii, that doesn't mean it's doing poorly.

- the price
- the poor line-up

Just look at Ace Combat 6 on Xbox360 : 70k unit of the game + 14k for the hardware
Imagine what would have done the game on PS3

It needs more Japanese targeted games !!!

It's selling about as well as the Gamecube and worse than the Saturn. That's not poorly? How would you characterize the sales of the Gamecube in the first year for comparison?
