Forums - General - Canadian Music Industry Seeks Copy Tax On Memory Cards $3/each!

source

"The Canadian music industry's copyright collective is demanding the creation of a new copying tax on all memory cards sold in Canada. The Canadian Private Copying Collective has filed for a tax of up to $3 per memory card to compensate for music copying on SD cards. If approved, the tax could cost consumers millions of dollars." Makes no less sense than the current levy exacted on blank CDs and audiotapes in Canada — and no more sense, either.

Looks like music just became free in Canada.

playing right now: Xenoblade Chronicles

Hype-o-meter, from least to most hyped:  the Last Story, Twisted Metal, Mass Effect 3, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Playstation ViTA

bet with Mordred11 that Rage will look better on Xbox 360.

The last time the music industry did this it backfired on them ... You'd think they would learn their lesson

Just like in the antipiracy fight. If you fail in one direction, just try harder in that direction. If people aren't buying CDs, burden down the ones who are buying with rootkits or crazy copy protection.

why tax devices that store the music?

it would make more sense to me if they taxed the devices that played it but w/e

but what's the point of taxing the stuff in the first place? it's not like they'll give the artists a cut or will they?

Absolutely not. It's just money grab for the execs and lawyers.

They simply are criminalize the entire Canadian population with the assumsion that we all pirate music.

I don't even listen to music for the last 10 years or so. Although, this is a cue for me to freely pirate music since they already charge me for it with the mandatory fee.

Why so much hysteria? I heard some of european countries are aleady practicing such taxes or sort of, so why blame Canada? It's not like lobby exists for nothing, industry may have their interests and need to protect those. And oviously this case is not something extreme, calm down.

I am calm. But that doesn't mean I am okay for them to assume I am a pirate. It's only fair if I get my "free" songs after I "paid" for them. Right?

Honestly I don't care. Feel free to explain your views to the cops though.
