Forums - Nintendo - IGN Builds their own Project Cafe console

Oh IGN, sometimes ... most of the times you made garbage but sometimes ... few times you have some interesting things:

What's this? Well it's pretty much a custom PC with the specs of the Cafe (at least the ones rumored) the idea was just to know how different current games'll look in the Cafe, so far everyone runs smooth and nice but without any games focused for the console is hard to tell if there's a big difference in graphics or power.

Yea, I'd rather see what it is capable of when the console is optimized for certain software.

The one issue I have is how powerful will the PS4/720 be when they launch in 2013/2014? Will they be so powerful as to outdo the Wii2 as considerably as this gen witnessed a power difference?I'm not sure if development costs will even allow that. How much better is an HD6000 than a HD4850?

$199.99 for an HD 4850?  LOL, who just ripped off IGN?   They cost almost half of that at Newegg (and would run for less but there is only 1 vendor selling them now).

The difference in closed system (Project Cafe) versus open system (PC) and the optimisations of the components and software make this an invlaid comparison.   All it really suggests (and we've already known this) is that it will run current generation PC and HD console games better than the HD consoles.

Yah I hate all the rumours. Nintendo will also be using customized chips so who knows how much power the Cafe will have. But it was cool to see IGN make the rumoured Cafe. I can't wait to see Nintendo's legit version.

Also Nintendo will get these parts so cheap its not funny. Though IGN's peice does re-assure me that the next Nintendo console will likely be the most expensive one built to date. I bet Nintendo will stick to their profitability strategy and Cafe will launch at a profit. So 450USD doesn't seem all that outrageous to me especially since 360 and PS3 both launched for higher prices then that.

Even if they used the rumored components, it would not have a BOM (Bill Of Materials) greater than $250.  I'm not tabulating in the contollers with HD screen since that seems so out there it's not worth speculating on yet.

If $450 is their target retail price, you can bet they are workign with a BOM of $350-$400 which would mean a console much more powerful than the rumored specs or possibly including those HD screen controllers.

10 year plan...haha.  That's a marketing theme.  ALL console makers want their consoles on the market for 10 years.

Hahahaha right.

The market will not support that. Sure, they will be on retail shelves for 10 years; an impressive feat, but remaining the main focus of software development? Absolutely not. Counting how long it might take for total  Xbox money since 201 to go black might take til 2015. Sony being financially ready to follow through on R&D might take 10 years.......

Agreed.  Even the mighty PS2, which downright dominated its competition, was only on the market for 6 years before PS3 released.  Sure, it's had a nice 10 year life, but not without the introduction of a successor.

Haha that was exactly my first thought. I bought my HD4850 for less than that... in 2008.

And with components like that, the Café can easily achieve a $300USD MSRP.

And giving Nintendo a profit at the same time.

yeah i kind of worry about wii getting left behind if they release such a weak console now for profit.  How much loss will 360/PS3 take to put a much more technolically superior console on the market 1-2 years later?  1GB of RAM, also, is definitely not enough for the Wii 2 to grow into.
