Forums - Sony - Star Ocean: Last Hope Freezing problems.

Uninstalling the game data from the hard drive shouldn't harm your save file at all. The only thing you lose is the time it takes to reinstall the game itself.

Might give this a try, but closer to last resort.

I had the same problem in another dungeon, doesnt seem to be the same place for everyone. Tried deleting/reinstalling date and didnt work. I did change the save slot the file was in that i was playing though and it never froze again. I was around 100 hrs when it started for me and at that point had never had 1 freeze whatsoever. Very wierd issue that seems to be sooooooo random.

Yea, it's so damn random that what you did is actually worth a shot, although I actually deleted many of my (older) saves to see if that had an effect, which it didn't..

If you look through my post history, this was my biggest issue with the game. Once I got to the second disc, I averaged one freeze per 2 hours of gameplay. Due to somewhat sparse savepoints, it made a bad game even more frustrating to play.

EDIT: I was playing the game on the 360. I did install the game on my HDD to try and make it better, but there was no major difference.

Sifting through 18000 posts is a real task! ;) Thanks for the feedback, the errors seem to differ even more across platforms. I've been contemplating skipping all battles in Miga Insect Warren to see if I get around it.

I actually had numerous freezing problems when playing the original Xbox version.  With the PS3 version i have over 130 hours and almost 4000 battles and haven't had a single problem.  My brother also played through the entire game with no problems.

I wonder if the issue stems from individual copies of the game.  Some discs might just be "bad".

Yea, which is pretty careless I'd say. It actually seems like more hassle to get a replacement disc than to just...give up

I don't have Star Ocean but I do have Resonance of Fate, which is another tri-Ace game. I had some freezing issues in Silver Canyon... it only freezes in the Silver Canyon "World Map" when a random battle is about to begin.

I searched "Resonance of Fate freezing" on google and found a lot of people complaining about it. Some people never had any issues with the game and some other people couldn't even get to the first chapter in the game because it always freezes, even after formatting the HDD and replacing the game for another copy of it.

Luckily, it only happened in Silver Canyon for me so I just didn't go there anymore because I don't need to and the game hasn't had any freezing issues anymore (touches wood).

It seems to be a tri-Ace problem... the bad thing is that they don't even know about it and no one has found a way to stop the problem from happening other than buying a new PS3. I assume no one has found any solution for the Star Ocean freezing either.

You could try backing up your HDD (Since the SO save data is copy protected >_>), formatting your PS3 and then restore the backup. Go to that place where the freezing happens and see if it still occurs. If it does, try to borrow a copy of the game from a friend or something, if it still happens then... I don't know, I think there's nothing else you can do... I doubt you'd want to buy a new PS3 just because that specific game freezes.

I've always been a bit paranoid of losing stuff if I do a backup, reformat, restore. If I reformat, do I lose local trophy & account data etc? And backup...does it backup game & save data?

Unfortunately i don't know anyone else where I live with the game, and since this is the only game that freezes, I highly doubt it's the PS3.

tri-Ace has to be aware of the problem, 'specially when you look at the amount of threads complaining about their customer support, which are just automated responses apparently.

If you format your HDD, everything that's stored in it will be erased... If you want your trophies back, you must sync your trophies with PSN and the trophies you earned and synched with before formatting will be back... so make sure you sync your trophies before formatting so everything you've earned is stored in Sony's servers.

Yes, backing up backs up game and save data, among other stuff. I'd recommend to delete all installed game data before backing up though, because they can make the back up file pretty big and it will take long to back up and restore later... you can reinstall your games anyways.

Yeah, it's not the PS3, it's the game... it has a bug that causes the freezing... you could finish the game without having any freezes or you could have bad luck and have constant freezing everywhere... and the same game in another PS3 could have no problems if the bug never occurs in the other PS3.

Lots of people complained about the Resonance of Fate problems and tri-Ace didn't do anything to fix it... The freezing isn't widespread enough for them to take any action. It's a rare and random bug that could happen any time... It happened to me in Silver Canyon after around 30 or 40 hours of playing the game without any problems... some people get the bug in the beginning of the game and can't advance because of it.

It's been a long time since both games have been released and they still haven't given any solution to the freezing... and probably never will.

You can read about the Resonance of Fate freezing bug if you want and see if you can find a solution that could also work in Star Ocean.

Thanks for the tips on reformatting...guesss I'll have to wait for PSN to come back online though..got my first plat the other day and there's no way I wanna lose that.

Apparently all the games in the SO series have some sort of game freezing bug...seems to be a tri-Ace thing! And at this stage so many years after the game release, i doubt anything would be done about it. It's pretty annoying to vest so many hours into a game, reach near the end, and get stopped in your tracks by a game crippling bug..

I'll have to scour that thread to see if I see anything interesting..thanks again.

It seems they fixed the issue for the PS3 version, based on what I've heard from users.

And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

I've tried it up to a month ago and got no prompt for an update...but then I probably wasn't connected to PSN. Guess it's another reason why PSN should hurry up and come back....unless updates are not PSN dependant?

I have the Xbox 360 version. I had problems at the last boss when it would freeze. I uninstalled it from my HD.... and the problems stopped. Try that? Also, I believe the game runs better in 720p. Try lowering your resolution.

*Played over 80 hours on it

Everyone needs to play Lost Odyssey! Any opposition to this and I will have to just say, "If it's a fight you want, you got it!"

Tried the lower resolution thing already. When you say uninstalled, you mean you left it that way and ran it off the disc? I'll have to see if there's an option like that on the PS3.

For those who might be interested, the game stopped crashing in Miga Insect Warren when I stopped using Arumat. He was still in the battle, but I just wasn't using him. I started back using him after that level and the game still hasn't crashed since.

Weird..
