Forums - Nintendo - Wii sold more than 1,000,000 this week WW

For those doubting the stockpiling effect, here's some raw numbers from you straight from VG Chartz. They've been doing 1.8 million a month since August, I believe they said. So, let's track from August to November. I had to do Europe/Other's numbers on a weekly scale, since Others doesn't have a Monthly tracking option yet.

Month: US + Japan + Europe
August: 621,516 + 291,200 + (87,078 + 87,826 + 94,412 + 85,962) = 1,267,994
September: 479,398 + 112,763 + (89,197 + 78,732 + 72,780 + 74,347 + 62,002) = 969,219
October: 480,132 + 102,868 + (53,927 + 100,755 + 139,794 + 139,746) = 1,017,222
November: 1,276,532 + 234,425 + (98,909 + 91,264 + 141,113 + 189,908) = 2,553,345

Total for 4 months: 5,807,780 (~7,200,000 manufactured)

So they had approximately 1.4 million Wiis stockpiled at the start of this season, by those numbers. Even with the margin of error, that's still quite a bit of stockpiling.

I think Nintendo were stockpiling in PAL and Japan, since those are the only places where the Wii was not (regularly) selling out. They probably just allocated more shipments to US this month, what with the news of lack of Wii (shipped for) Australia and all other news.

I am a PC gamer, and also have a NDS now, but without access to a Nintendo Wii until End of 2007.

Currently playing: Super Smash Brothers Brawl(Wii), Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer(DS), Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime (DS), WiiFit(Wii)

Games Recently Beaten: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King (Normal; Very Hard after the next DLCs become available)

1 word: RTFA

Not only 1 million, but almost 1.5 million. Although American sales weren't as high as I thought they would be, still it owned. Damn. Can't wait to see software in America and Japan.

Also GHIII is platinum now.

I think they must've started stockpiling before August. By crunching December numbers thus far, I got:

December: US (307,377 + 261,643 + 173,798 + 740,791) + Japan (73,246 + 113,091 + 170,125 + 268,954) + Europe (302,064 + 361,611 + 346,914 + 448,127) = 3,567,741

3,567,741 - 1,800,000 (December's produced units, appx.) = 1,767,741 units over (appx.)

That's a good 350,000 units over my estimated 1.4 million.

my prediction for 1 million was correct. haha at people dissing my numbers. 18.98 million by Jan 1st will happen. HA!!
I'm predicting 19 million. The Wii will sell faster and faster until the new year in Japan, and this sales data was for the 22nd. The next round of data will include the 23rd, 24th, and 25th. I'm expecting at least 400k-500k next week WW

@sky render

since Nintendo usually makes conservative estimates, lets take 1,800,000 as the minimum number of units they can make in a month. Assuming they pay people to work overtime, and they crank these things out as fast as possible, making up the missing 350,000 units over 5 months turns out to be an actual total of only 70,000 more units per month. Or in other words only ~4% more production than what they stated as their current rate.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Indeed, that is quite likely the case.  I've said it so many times: Nintendo's the most conservative developer out there.  I can see them giving their minimum production per month as the standard figure.

...ah, but there is still another week remaining this month - they'd have to sell '0' next week in order to remain only 350k over.

Just like every other console, the Wii is going to experience a drop-off in sales next week.  Quite likely the worldwide total for it will be sub-600,000 (if I had to guess, I'd say lower than that, even).  That's still not much more than their minimum production estimate, though.  And that's also assuming that they've only stockpiled since August, which seems unlikely given what we know of Nintendo's practices.

...wow, almost 1.5 mil worldwide. I wonder if it will hit 19 million this week.

There is no such thing as a console war. This is the first step to game design.

probably wii is gonna be outsold by ps3 and xbox 360 next week
