I've owned a SNES, an N64, a Gamecube and a Wii. But I've been totally disappointed in Wii for quite a while. It pretty much just had WSR and NSMBW in 2009, and nothing of that quality since. Since Nintendo clearly isn't interested in building a complete software catalog, but instead wants to just make 1 version of their hit games each gen (for example making Mario Kart Wii and NSMBW and not following them up with any more platformers or racers worth playing), chances are I won't buy into the next gen until it's almost over and Nintendo have been forced to slash prices.
So it's time to build a metaphorical gaming bunker to survive the onslaught of Zombie Nintendo. I expect Zombie Nintendo to last at least 2 generations, but hopefully I'm wrong.
Here's how I think I can stock my bunker:
Finally get a DS. I'm not a kid, so I don't really game on-the-go, but DS still has at least a dozen games I'd like to play. It might be kind of weird to sit down and play handheld games like home console games, and it will be comparitively limited in multiplayer, but there's a 100% chance of having a blast with NSMB and MKDS.
Minecraft. If I can find some people to play with on a server regularly, this could last me a long time. I haven't played much since 1.2.
PS2 with GTA trilogy. I'm not that interested in most of what PS2 offered, but these games were fun to just run around and make trouble.
Old SNES games on a giant CRT. I have a friend who was gifted a giant flatscreen CRT. It's basically what you watched the Superbowl on in 2002. It's ridiculous, and like all normal people he has no place to put it. I don't either, but if I made space anyways, it might be cool for all pre-Wii/HD consoles. Yeah, I'm not married.
Old NES games. Here's the one where I'm not sure what route to take. I could get an original NES that will break and keep breaking. I could get one of those knock-off NES systems that probably won't emulate perfectly. I could buy games on the virtual console, with lower selection and emulation that I already know I don't like from trying some of the masterpiece games on Smash Bros. Or I could steal the games and just get a USB NES controller. I don't love any of the options, but I'm thinking the knock-off NES might be best. I like to actually buy the game carts and play on the TV, and the knock-offs will be more reliable than an actual NES.
I think we've all been through gaming droughts, where there just isn't enough coming out that you're interested in. What are your go-to games or things from the past you never played that you use to stock your gaming bunker?
"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."
Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.
