I don't believe the U.S. Government directly contributed to 9/11... that argument is specious, but it could certainly be said, that the U.S. government was propping up terrorist regimes, because at the time, the Muslims fight with the Soviets seemed like a good idea to encourage. Then the soviet union fell, and those groups, while still medlling with Russia... the more obvious target became the remaining superpower: the United States.
We certainly supplied many of the weapons these groups used to maintain control in Afghanastan, etc. We were so mad at Iran, we helped Iraq.
Actually it was Israel who had the better grasp on the situation warning Washington that Iraq, while a onetime enemy of Iran, was no friend of ours...but we didn't listen.
All these mistakes in foreign policy...aren't the real issue though.
The real issue, is whether when we talk about a country that detains prisoners without trial, ignores human rights, engages in torture, cares nothing for the rights of anyone....man, woman, child....do we want, that the country we are discussing, is the United States....not Iraq, Iran, etc.
I'm sickened by those who think they are being 'pragmatic' in allowing these sort of things. Yes, in a strict sense, if the United States goes down the path of brutal dictatorship...history has proven that brutal regimes tend to hang on to power....if all you care about is flag waving, then maybe this does seem like a good idea.
But if you are a U.S. citizen, that wants a strong United States, because you believe the United States stands for something important....then you have to be really concerned when it is not standing for any particular principles other than raw power.
I want a strong U.S....only if the U.S. is a U.S. I can be proud of...the U.S. of George Bush, is a sick U.S. that is very strange to me....
I hope this practice of torturing U.S. citizens...and nevermind if the example of this particular article is only a resident, not a citizen, all these rules apply to and have happened against U.S. citizens as well....its ashame, but the rule of law we are taught about in schools doesn't exist...from the federal level, all the way to the family court system, people are tried without attorneys, convicted without evidence.
Just ask anyone recently divorced, if any trial was held before 'emergency support' orders were issued, or 'restraining orders' required any evidence, or the accused to even be present...THEY DO NOT.
It's all linked to a society that cares more about power than freedom...I'd like to see that trend completely reversed, and to have a government that cares about the details.
