Forums - Nintendo - Metroid: Other M - The Black Sheep....or so we thought

Bad controls.

General lack of appeal.

Samus acting like a 10-year old.

Nuff said.

Majora's Mask dissapointing??? news to me, IMHO that game mops the floor the OOT, no damn princess to rescue, Ganondorf nowhere in sight, crazy powerups, and a damn moon 'bout to wipe out humanity. Its my favorite in the series. THey took the fomula and pushed it to the edge and still mantained the Zelda feel, whats not to like

Gumby wasn't referring to your feelings on the game, but how many of called it disappointing.

I just have to say your anecdotes seem to make it look as though you hang out with like-minded people, and however that works out for you, please stop presenting it as some kind of defininitive proof of any public opinion.

Where did i say it was proof?? i just wanted to know who were these people who said it was dissapointing, because all the reviews i read at the time the game was highly regarded

You lose all credibility when you take something to such an extreme that even casual players of the game know you're wrong.

And yet you are trying to spin Metroid as a linear game for the purpose of making Prime look bad and justifying MOM.

I'm too old for this gaming shit.

No, of all mainline Metroid games, Other M actually is the black sheep regardless of whether one enjoyed it or not.

So was Majora's Mask for the Zelda series.  10 years later, a whole new generation turned it into a cult classic.

Also, I[d like to point out, a lot of the things people complain about with Other M are the same thing people complained about with Metroid Fusion.  Including forced story, limited gameplay, bad 'colorful' graphical design and 'ruining Samus' character'.  Just ever since Other M came out, they stopped complaining about that game and focused on Other M.

Irrelevant. My statement stands.

Personally I prefer MM to OOT, but it has only risen in popularity in recent years. There was a long time where every site had OOT listed as Best Game Ever Made, while MM was considered something of a black sheep in that it didn't follow in the foot-steps of Zelda 1, LttP and OoT.

I can dig up an old article for you if you like... Either way, the point is many of Nintendo's games have the tendency to be further appreciated as time goes by, even if the initial response is luke-warm (such as Wind Waker, or Sunshine which was really heavily criticized).

There is even a post on this thread from Rol mentioning that Super Metroid wasn't considered the best thing since sliced bread immediately when it launched.. Wide-spread appreciation of novel ideas takes a long time, way longer than a single console generation affords.

That's not to say every game that isn't immediately well received ages into a classic, far from it! But it does mean that on many an occasion initial impressions can be misleading. Something as trivial and unimportant as the name "Wii" was ridiculed for at least a year until it was accepted by people who heard it. How many years do you think it should take a 20 hour game  to reach that same level of penetration? or a controller shaped like a remote for that matter?

I'm sure there are many people who played Other M and didn't like it, but what I'm saying is that there are at least as many who haven't played it and would enjoy it for its good qualities. In that sense you could say the game failed to reach its target audience, and I'd agree.

It may even turn out that Other M is forgotten, and that still wouldn't diminish my appreciation of Nintendo for taking risks and going in different directions. On the contrary! If you never try, I can guarantee you that you never fail... I'm confident Nintendo have enough perspective to realize the good qualities in games like Other M and use those ideas again on a different concept.

Until you've played it, every game is a system seller!

People obviously means a broader group than reviewers. Go look for dicussions about the game, and you'll see a variety of opinions. It's a pretty divisive game (I'm indifferent to it, BTW).

No I didn't.  You're just one of those people who thinks 'If he doesn't absolutely hate Other M, then he must love it and thinks exactly the opposite of my views of the game'.

I have even said, in most of my post no doubt, various areas Other M could have improved.  But at the same time, I'm pointing out how Prime wasn't a 'direct copy of Super Metroid' and also could have done things differently.  Neither one came close to the balance of gameplay progression, fighting and item collection in games like Super Metroid or Zero Mission.  They're opposite extremes.

Also, good job avoiding the point just to try and make me look like the bad guy.

I don't agree so you're wrong.

Man, I should take that approach to things.  A lot easier to just plug my ears and go 'La la la la la'.

Majora's Mask built off the hype of Ocarina of Time.  But beside this point, the vast majority of people back then (and still) think Ocarina of Time is the better game.  Be it for nostalgia or for its 'classic feel' or because of its story.  Liek I said, there is a growning group of people who like Majora's Mask more.  But a very vocal minority isn't the majority.  Its just like those who claim Mother 3 is the best game ever, or like Pokemon Gold/Silver more than the other games.  They're not the majority, just a very vocal minority.
