In Japan it might be considered a success relative to the Prime games. In the states it has done reasonably well, but in Europe I wouldn't call it anything less than a bomb.

It seems to be substantially overtracked in Japan compared to Media Create numbers.  71,410 compared to 109,568 on VGC.

daaamn! adding insult to injury... and here I thought there was at least some benefit to the more Japanese-oriented approach they took with that game...

Most of the sales are at bargain bin prices which started only a couple weeks after release.  It can sell another 500k and these sales are still awful because of that, MP1 and 2 never dropped to Other M prices even when became Players CHoice/Platinum hits games.  MP3 didn't either.

Where is it at bargain prices?

£10

£11.50-£15

£15

£10

£15

It has been cheaper too, but I'm just linking current prices.

Well I need to check US store prices.

They had it for $15 a few places I saw (and I still passed on it).

In the next-gen, I would like to see Nintendo do another 3D version of Metroid.  I would also like the addition of online multiplayer to this game.  I think Metroid has the potential to become the Halo of the Nintendo brand, but they need to modernize it a bit.

Most anticipated games of 2011:

Uncharted 3,Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Rocksmith

Modern Warfare 3, Super Mario 3D

It seems in order to get that 500-1500k range you had to appeal using spin-offs huh, because the lowest selling mainline Metroid is well over 500k above what Other M is.

It depends on what you consider a Spin-off.  because Metroid Prime Hunters was still considered one of the 'Prime' games.  And Metroid Prime Trilogy only sold 700,000.

Also, Sakamoto has already said he's interested in making a new Metroid.  So we really have no basis to say a new one wouldn't come.  And considering the Sakamoto made Metroid games are usually about 4-5 years apart, it could easily be another 3 years or more before its made anyway.

I don't know about that. I would assume that many Metroid fans still bought it anyway, even if they just did it out of curiosity of how bad of a game it really is or to add it to their collection.

I also find it hard to call this game's sales good, it was a fairly big game with a well known brand name and treated as such by Nintendo with their marketing efforts. Besides, the first "bad" game launching after a series of stellar titles usually doesn't show how much the reputation of the brand was damaged. It's the game that comes out afterwards. MOM wasn't that tough of a sale for Nintendo, because fans trusted the name. That is gone now and people will take more of a wait and see approach when it comes to the next installment in the Metroid series.

I won't deny the sales are weaker for the hype put into it.  However, considering its gettling close to the sales of games like Prime 2 and Super Metroid, which were also hyped with major advertising and treated like a 'major' Nintendo title, I don't see how Other M can be considered so much of a failure.  Remember, Super Metroid, the fan favorite, only sold 1.4 million.  If Other M, the fans hated game, can sell close to that lifetime, it may just prove Metroid fans will buy any Metroid game.

Agreed! Also I hope this shows that if anything the Metroid franchise is a B level property maybe even C level. For the game to hit 1 million after all the bad press  I would be amazed. We still know no matter how much Nintendo put into it. It still didn't have a budget bigger than the first Galaxy or a HD game. So selling a million is still good. Nintendo just had hopes it would do more than that.

Also total sales compared to launch sales show a major lack of legs, which means the sales aren't really a vindication for the game.

Yea, they spent 3 years working on it and didn't even have a million yet to show for it. Expectations from Nintendo were above Prime 3 levels.

They need to focus their efforts on another series for now.

In all relaity, Metroid Other M probably didn't have the biggest production budget.  I mean, they even outsourced a lot of the work to Team Ninja.  But more than this, the development staff isn't even half as large as something like Zelda: Twilight Princess and Mario Galaxy.  Or even Mario Kart.

Of course, without an actual statement from Nintendo, we won't know exactly its development budget.  This is just guessing.  And it also doesn't mean they've made a profit on Other M.

Then again, neither were the received sales.......

It's not just about the profit. It's about the series doing worse than before, and failing to sell the system and expand the audience.

This comes out to be 810,000 units sold worldwide.  And while you may not consider that a lot...consider that when the game came out, people were predicting it was a failure selling just 400,000 units.  If the current sales show anything, its that this game does indeed have legs, selling twice as much as its first months sales, and still rising steadily.

Were do you get that from? In the Metroid: Other M sales predictions thread the average for lifetime sales is 1,737,500.
