I'm actually amazed that there isn't a thread on this, but anyway...
The South (particularly Alabama) of the US was hit hard on Wednesday by a series of tornadoes. Over 80 tornadoes (211 reported) took place on April 27 alone, including one that hit Tuscaloosa, Alabama and apparently 60 miles northeast and crashed through the northern side of Birmingham. Over 300 people have been recorded dead and this number is thought to be so high because the tornadoes hit cities dead-on instead of passing through the outskirts. Many people have had their homes destroyed, or are without power, water, and gasoline.
