I can't believe you suggested the PS3 over the 360 for a person without either for games.

Of course, since you've only owned a 360 for all of but a few minutes, I guess I should expect that. For a person that's owned the system since November 2005, I can tell you there are plenty of excellent exclusives to want to buy the system for. Far more than the PS3, IMO.

That's because of the "IMO".  Depending on tastes its relatively easy to prefer the PS3 if you're more drawn to Uncharted vs Gears, or GT5 vs Forza.

Right now I suspect the PS3 probably has more exclusives numerically than 360 since all the timed stuff has elapsed.  Certainly when I look at potential exclusives coming this year for both systems I'm interested in buying (having both PS3 and 360) the PS3 list is larger at this time.

I'd say it's easy to see it either way depending on gaming preferences - particularly given 90% or more of the consoles libraries are identical - and that your flat out disbelief and clear preference for the 360 is more about you than some real world 360 library advantage.

Or the other 50 360 exclusives that aren't on the PS3, or the 150 XBLA exclusives that aren't on PS3.

That was my point. If you have been a person thats owned a 360 for any length of time, you'll see what the 360 offered over the entire history and realize there is a kingly sum of exclusives over the past 6 years that never made it to PS3. Of course, it does come to preference, but your preference can be inherantly skewed depending on how long you've owned a console, as the exclusivity list is dwindling for the 360, whereas a veteran owner knows that the list of exclusives has been incredible over the past 6 years.

Of my library, the following games I own are 360 exclusives (these are just the ones I own, FYI):

  • Blue Dragon
  • Lost Odyssey
  • Tales of Vesperia (US)
  • Tropico 3
  • Crackdown
  • EDF2017
  • Dead Rising
  • Deadly Premonition (US)
  • Mass Effect
  • Condemned 1 2
  • Culdcept Saga
  • Infinite Undiscovery
  • Two Worlds (obviously horrible, but I guess worth mentioning)
  • Ridge Racer 6

For what its worth, they are all 3rd party exclusives (with BD/LO being debatable). These titles make up about 1/3rd or more of my entire X360 collection, which is pretty nice. I didn't include absolute 1st party titles like Forza 2. And of course, this is my list of owned titles, not ones I've played, as that list would expand 3 or 4 fold.

That is why I say its crazy to argue the PS3/360 exclusivity debate without having a deep understanding of the 360 library. Its had a bit more exclusives over the years, which is something a recent 360 owner wouldn't know about. Furthermore, my list doesn't include XBLA titles, as that list is nearly 100% exclusive with only Castle Crashers and SOTN (I think) being multi-plat.

I've had a 360 for over 7 months and access to one for two years.  I know its library.  I can easily see how someone would prefer it.  I can also easily see how someone would prefer PS3.

Each has plenty of exclusives and, last 18 months or so, PS3 arguable more retail exclusives, while 360 maintains a larger download selection.

Most titles cancel out depending on preferences, 360 has LO but others might prefer VC on PS3.  360 has indie titles and the like PS3 has minis, 360 has Shadow Complex, Limbo, etc. PS3 has Flower, Wipehout HD, Pixel Junk Shooter, etc.

Yes, over 6 years the 360 has lots of desirable exclusives, but now, after 4 to 5 years depending on region so does the PS3, games like God of War, inFamous, Heavy Rain, LittleBigPlanet, Flow, Wipeout, Superstardust, Pixel Junk Games, Folklore, Resistance, Killzone and so on.

Today, it's impossible to say one has clear superiority.  Early on the 360 did for sure.  But those days are gone.  Now its down to taste in exclusives or other features.  The core library of each is made up of identical multi-platform titles, from CoD, AC, Bioshock, Battlefied titles and of course many, many more... to online games like DeathSpank, Castle Crashers, etc.

MS did work hard early in the 360 life to differentiate, with timed exclusives, or paid for development, but that time really has passed and now each boasts and equally strong library.  Even when I look at Kinect/Move I see more or less a draw.  Kinect has DC, Adventures and Sports as good titles, then it gets iffy down to a poor fighting title.  Move has SC, Singstar, Tumble and then it gets iffy down to a poor fighting title (in general critical view, I know some folks love those fighting titles).

Therefore I stick to what I say - it is now impossible to argue either is automatically the better choice.  It depends on preference for game types and which exclusives you prefer.

I do believe that currently, in terms of what's visible, PS3 is going to have more exclusives this year than 360, although that might change - and I believe it's the fact that right now the PS3 looks to be getting more exclusives that drove Happinesses response: i.e. both have big libraries but PS3 seems to be getting more games right now hence he'd recommend that if he had to make a choice.

I say look to the exclusives that interest you and chose there, plus consider how much online matters and whether you need the additional functionality of Live to meet your needs.

Awesome post.  I won't even make a pun about your username, even though I'm extremely tempted to do so.  I guess M$'s mistake is that they didn't expect this gen to go as well as it did or as long as it did (I support this line of thinking with no evidence, of course!).  In the past, five years was about all we needed and then the battle for the next next gen would kick off.  It's been close to six years and the battle is still showing no signs of ending!  Early advantages like partnering with Namco, Capcom, Squaresoft, and other "Sony Partners" put the 360 on the PS3's level when, in the past, it was considered a little less.  Now, being on level playing field isn't enough for the 360.  It needs something to make it stand out (Kinect?) or make it superior (new exclusive franchises).

As it stands, there's just too much in common between the PS3 for the dispute over library exclusivity to be considered conclusive.

Around the Network

This all mirrors my thinking. The differences between 360 and PS3 in terms of software is largely a matter of taste. This is why I said 'probably PS3' in the contested Wii-owner recommendation: the libraries are broadly the same, but the PS3 does more and has free online play, so it has a marginal advantage. The only strong reason to go for a 360 instead of the PS3 (assuming you're not desperate to play Halo or similar) is the online chat options, and for someone unused to such a function, what the PS3 offers is more than enough.

Very good and informative post. I share pretty much the same feelings, having had a PC and PS3, and purchased a 360 much later (one month ago).

I dislike the H-U-G-E power brick of the 360. The controllers are also a bit too big and heavy for my hand, the PS3's controller fits better (batteries are also a huge annyoance, and the play-and-charge kit is another H-U-G-E piece of hardware, which is terrible compared to the PS3's much simpler/smaller/cheaper controller recharge method). And I of course grudge the need to pay to play online. And I have no interest at all in Kinect.

As a whole I still like the PS3 much better and at the moment I still play it far more despite the 360 being my newest console.

I checked your game library--you need to update it!  Anyway, grab Lost Odyssey for the 360.  If you gave FF13 a 10/10, LO will change your religion!
