I can't see this being for the 720. I mean unless MS are planning to release the 720 next year (highly unlikely), this is probably going to be for the 360.
I could see Halo 4 being the last push that the 360 will get in terms of sales before MS finally unveils their next gen console (similar to zelda skyward sword for nintendo wii).

true halo 4 is going to be the last swift move to make another big title to push 360 for holidays maybe holiday 2012 for halo 4 then after wards the 720 for 2013
Nothing new. We all knew that they are working on next game and it's more than just 10 month by now.
I will be very angry if they don't announce Halo 4 this year.
Halo 4 on 360 would surprise me TBH. Seems like a waste of the title.
My thinking is that Halo 4, this late in 360 life and with 3 Halo FPS titles already out for 360 would do nothing more than sell software for MS. It would have a minimal impact on console sales and as the first non-Bungie Halo (FPS) runs the risk of allowing gamers to see if the Bungie magic has been lost prior to MS next console.
All in all I see little strategic value for MS releasing Halo 4 on 360 and actually potential risks.
Halo 4 on their next console makes a lot more sense. Halo remains MS core fanchise, selling way more than Gears and really the main exclusive title that brings in the core to new consoles early. Halo 4 on their next console would likely ensure a decent transition of current owners and a strong start, particularly if tied to a new Gears as well.
Of course, if MS really want to try and extend 360 life then I could see Halo 4 helping, but that seems a lesser strategic option to me than using it to push their next console.
But hey, if it's good I'll try it, although I found Reach dissapointing (as a Halo title although the gameplay was fine and the MP very good and I did like the new engine) so I'll be looking for a really good SP campaign plus some truly fresh stuff on MP.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
I think that Halo 4 should be the start of a new trilogy that takes place entirely on a new console. Then again if it is a new trilogy is it best to launch the trilogy on the 360 with a huge customer base and continue on the Xbox Next driving sales to the next console?
Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.
IF they're working on an HD remake as well, then this could be a 4 year dev time for Halo 4, meaning it'd release late 2014, year after the new xbox launch??
Whatever happens, I can't see them launching Halo 4 the same time as the new Xbox, and I can't see Xbox 720 launching any later than 2013 xmas, and I can't see a mainline Halo title having less than 3 years dev time. You do the math.
it does make so much more sense to release halo 4 on the next console. there would be almost no point 2 releasing the 4th halo game(halo 3 odst is an expansion hense the words halo 3) on what will be by then a dying console. As a launch title in 2013 for the next box it could move so many consoles.
Halo MCC will sell 5+ million copies(including digital)
halo 5 will sell 10 million copies(including digital)
x1 will pass ps4 in USA, and UK.
Well first of all it would be Halo 5 because Reach was 4. But anyways I am jumping up and down of my seat right now! i love reach but it's getting a bit boring now so.... and psn is down so I can't play Killzone 3. This just made my day.
