what I meant by canceling it is removing all information from their PS store and not using the service since Jan this year..

below is the link the first of many class-action lawsuits.. Sony violated the Information Protection Act in their own disclaimer. Sony will lose all these cases if it is proven that they had knowledge of this breach as early as the 19th..

PSN cards, doesn't require any real info, as for the lawsuit you really need to read your own articles they filled for status they aren't even filling the lawsuit yet and won't beable too until psn users step forward and considering nothing has actually happened with the info and no1s credit card was stolen I seriously doubt it will get very far

I said they filed it, did I say it went through? Please stop trying to twist my words nothing pisses me off more.. These lawsuits will happen and Sony is going to lose alot of money they damn well should because trying to coverup and hide information about a confidentality leak is 100% illegal. You sit there and support the company that could have completely fucked you out of your money and try to defend this bullshit, you make me sick.

As for the other post, don't jump on me about bullshit, I stated what has happened to my friends and other I know that have PSN and having your information compromised when it is supposed to be secure on their server is nothing to joke about.. I canceled stop supporting and playing PSN because I saw just how greedy and underhanded Sony is, say what you want about bullshit facts, everything I stated there is 100% true.

Not really, you claim they were trying to cover it up but have no proof, you claim they are money hungry but out of the 3 they rip you off the least and the credit information is fine and Sony wouldn't have been the one that screwed me out of it the hackers would have been, at absolute most Sony was negligent so yeah not even close to 100% true, I'd say 30% maybe

Microsoft ban proven cheaters and perma bans consoles for piracy on Live.  The statement saying they do nothing is complete bullshit.  The ability to cheat the most is a JTAG hacked box and they get perma banned within hours.   Oh and for the record they do monitor for less obvious cheating methods such as quick fire solutions and you can be banned if caught using them.  If you're gonna try and pretend you're debating seriously at least get your facts straight guys.

So, hold on, what if we'd previously used a card to purchase something, but, deleted the information afterwards...?

Nothing ever get deleted. Not by design anyways.

If you want to be 100% sure, just request your bank to send you a new card.

I live in the UK (as a student) and asked my bank to block my card, after explaining to them what's happened but they refused to do that. They said that I have to keep checking my statements and wait until I notice something weird and then inform them about the fraud. It's just ridiculous!

That would totally suck, if credit card information was taken. I guess I learned I shouldn't save credit card information on sony devices. (I still trust microsoft, and maybe nintendo....maybe.)

PSN User Had $600 in Fraudulent Withdrawals From Debit Card

http://vgn365.com/2011/04/25/psn-user-had-600-in-fraudulent-withdrawals-from-debit-card/

You can't really be that dumb.  Your credit card info isn't anymore safe with MS or Nintendo.

I suspect if card details were a risk Sony would be notifiying PSN accounts via email that have credit card details registered asking them to check for fraudulent activity.

You would think so huh. Or maybe they can just make a blog post and hope you guys see it. I mean Sony is the most benevolent and honest corporation out there.

That's my point.  I mean, as an aside, they should have emailed just about the shutting down of PSN, but my point is if they knew credit card details had been comprimised I believe procedure would pretty much demand they email you immediatly they could.  Certainly credit card companies would expect immediate warning if card details were known to have been comprimised.

The blog notes they don't believe credit card info has been stolen just personal info, and hence it was more down to their choice to email or not (they made the wrong choice IMHO as I've noted).

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Yeah, especially with interwebs where you can check your credit card transactions daily it's a piece of piss to figure out if your credit card is being used by someone else. I'll be checking my credit card transactions daily and I'll know immediately anything goes awry.

The pain in the arse is renewing all the direct payments I make off my credit card if I do need to get a new card and new number.

The actual losers in credit card faud are the retailers who have people buy stuff off them with stolen credit card info and then the credit card company doesn't pay out.

No offense but you really should go and read up more on identity theft as you are woefully uninformed of the potential consequences. Your credit card being charged is the least of your worries, that is at least easily reversible and usually at the expense of someone else (ie retailer or CC company or Sony). The real concern is them using your details to obtain further credit under your name, how do you propose to check someone hasn't taken out a loan or credit card in your name in a timely fashion? most of the truly serious issues around identity fraud you won't find out about until you do a  credit check on yourself or while applying for a loan/CC next time or when you get a warning letter that your new loan repayment is long since overdue. reversing black marks against your credit rating is a nightmare as well.
