Forums - Nintendo - Pachter Time: Wii 2 = Dreamcast ???

For once I sorta agree with Pachter, but not for the same reasons, and not quite the same result

The next system is likely going to be failure , not because of power or lack thereof, but because its too much like a super gamecube, the GCN was no success, it was mediocre at best, and the Wii was not successful because it followed the ideals of the GCN, it was in fact successful because it largely abandoned those ideals and went back to ideals similar to what made NES a huge success.

Project Cafe sounds like just going back to the failures of the GCN/N64/SNES eras, and there is a good chance that games like 2D Mario will never see the light of day on that system (especially since we are seeing them push for a 3D mario instead of 2D on the 3DS).

So yeah it'll probably be a failure, but it likely won't destroy Nintendo or force them out of the console business, as they are far more profitable than Sega was, however 3DS and Cafe will see huge declines from the DS and Wii generation, I don't see many grannies playing cafe.

Hopefully this time Nintendo will learn its lesson after one generation rather than the three it wasted the last time.

On another note, it will be nice that Nintendo gets the 3rd party titles that the 360 and PS3 have been getting, at the level they are currently coming out  now.  Also, look forward to death of the Wii 2 talk.

He's pretty modest here considering that not too long ago he said the ship had already sailed on a successful Wii 2.

1. He's wrong for assuming the power of the dreamcast had anything to do with its fall. So the comparison, even as it is, is still a fallacy.

2. Funny turnaround. He kept saying that simply a more powerful Wii was vital for Nintendo. Then again, he lied that his WiiHD prediction came true with the Move.

1.  Actually from a tech standpoint the Wii 2 will be just like the Dreamcast was.  Slightly more powerful than the current gen systems but not near as powerful as Xbox 720 or PS4 will be.  He simply uses the Dreamcast comparison saying that if going HD is all the Wii 2 would be it would fail.  And he's 100 percent correct.

2.  Its not a turnaround at all.  He's been saying for about a year now HD wouldn't be enough.  Early on he said they needed the HD more than a revolution, but now he says it will take more than that to stay viable with the competition.  Again, he is 100 percent correct.

Here's a direct quote from him earlier this year on the topic from before the Nintendo HD rumors even started.

"Unfortunately I cannot speculate on what a Wii 2 will have. I literally have no information on it, so anything I speculate will surely be wrong.  But I can say this. Nintendo doesn't go with the flow, they never have, and gamers can expect Nintendo to continue to be original and offer up an experience that simply cannot be found or matched on other platforms."

1. I wrote "anything to do with its fall", not about the tech alone. This is from what he said:

"too late to compete with the PlayStation and N64, and not sufficiently advanced to compete with the PS2 and Xbox"

So he's not correct, as his reasoning is faulty.

2. He only changed after the Move was shown, so he could, again, lie that his BS prediction came through in that way. It was clear then that his prediction wasn't goint to honestly come true, so he had to bluff.

You guys read way too much into things and are bashing the heck out of a guy who seems like a genuinely nice human being just because he gave his predictions and what he thought would happen?  Thats his job, he gets paid to do it so when people ask him to give a prediction do you want him to say "No actually I might be wrong and a bunch of people on forums are going to make fun of me and say I'm a moron and a fanboy."

No.  And I honestly would question how many posters that call him out for "horrible predictions" would have any success whatsoever if they were asked by the entire gameing media day in and day out what they think the future of gameing will look like.  Here's a hint, success rates wouldn't be very high for anyone.  Because no one knows the future.

Sure Pachter is wrong alot, and he's right alot of the time too.  Its this guys job to analyze the industry and make educated guesses on how it will go, that doesn't make him a loser however if he predicts something wrong.

"bashing the heck out of a guy"

Woah, I'm not bashing the guy. I made sure to qualify my comments, as I don't think bashing people is right, even when I don't agree with them. So don't respond to me as though I was a whole group.

I'm not saying you in particular and you were pretty fair, just in disagreement with him.

But look at some of the comments in here.  Some people just take it too far on rageing on this guy just for doing his job.

Well if you aren't telling something to one person, it's not a good idea to quote that person and then follow with that line. It just makes it confusing. Try quoting some of the comments that actually offend you.

so he's been criticising Nintendo for years to release a new platform and when they announce one, this is this reaction?
