LOL @ people thinking Nintendo can steal the core from Microsoft ... er no chance.

It takes more than horsepower to attract the core, and Nintendo's IPs are just NOT attractive to the core crowd, coupled with the fact they don't have online in their blood and they'll forever be behind MS in that department, heck only Sony is catching up now.

All I see is finally Nintendo fans will get to play games we've been playing for years. There will be plenty of ports.

Is there any point? It's already been shown the wii userbase doesn't appreciate the core offerings they get. If Wii 2 is aimed at the core, it won't attract anywhere NEAR the amount of core owners PS360 has. and if it's a casual system again, they simply won't be buying Assassin's Creed ect in the numbers PS360 do.

I just don't think Nintendo can ever go after the core and be a sucess. I think they need to stick to what they now know and come up with something to entice the blue ocean all over again.

I do think Nitnendo are now realising how unloyal that sector is though, does make me wonder why MS and Sony, MS obviously more so, are going after them.

3rd parties need more platforms to port to more than the platform holders need them. They'll get the multiplats just by virtue of existing

3DS has fixed the online issue with Nintendo?

single friend code and unified friends list across games, alerts for when friends get online and what they're playing and the ability to send and receive messages midgame

All the fundamentals to an easy online experience are in place

Reinforces my earlier point. If Nintendo are going after the core (and this console certainly doesn't sound as close to casual friendly as the Wii was) they're going to have to do better than just the basics.

I'm sure Nintendo COULD get online up to standard on consoles (and please don't compare 3DS online with a home console online, you know they're different.) but to equal or surpass xbox live? never gonna happen.

"In a nutshell in order to stave off any PMS (Post Malstrom Stress) I'll sum it up in a one liner: Nintendo just pumped up a specific style of game controller, made mega dollars on the trend and then abandoned as their main console focus in less than 5 years."

How would that stave off anything? For those of us that still agree wit him, that's a bad thing to us.

Nintendo didn't make a "trend" to make millions off of. Or if they did think that, they know less of the market than even Malstrom thought.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

So you're saying that Assassins Creed is a CORE game? Please More casuals buy that than Core gamers.

Lets say this console takes off as well as the Wii did, or close to.  Assuming Microsoft and Sony Launch in 2014 as they've gone on record saying, how many consoles could Nintendo realistically have in the market by then?  Anyone care to estimate?  If the install base is large enough, we may get a ps2 to xbox kinda thing going on.  Nintendo's hardware would be competant enough for 3rd parties to port their games even when the other two trump the specs in 2014.  Nintendo doesn't necessarily need 3rd party EXCLUSIVES in my opinion.  Rather they need comparable 3rd party ports so satisfy the masses.  Most 3rd parties would prefer to get their content on as many platforms as possible to try and recoup dev costs.

Just to get back on topic a little.

Squilliam, am I correct in thinking the PC to NES6 gap will be negligible compared with the PC to 360/PS3 gap at the start of this gen. Crysis is still the most demanding game on the PC and N6 could handle it easily enough?

In terms of practical stuff with what developers are actually making then it'll pretty much be 1:1 and yes it'd be able to handle Crysis 1 as it was originally made. However nothing can actually stand up to the performance of a desktop computer in the console world simply because a PC can easily burn 300W of power and use the latest up to date technology.
