They mainly punked them in a sense that Sony and Microsoft are catering to upmarket customers. But neither of them will be able to move even further upmarket (800$ consoles? Longer development cycle for games?).
If Nintendo plays their cards right they will be better at motion gaming (just like you said) and "hardcore" enough to get a decent share of the upmarket customers which would screw Sony's and Microsoft's business. They weren't even able to recover their losses yet.
I don't get the purpose of that new Nintendo controller so I'll wait until e3 to go bonkers over anything. Things are getting more interesting, though.

both Microsoft and Sony can easily make a console for under $400 that is three to five times stronger than the PS3.

But for the time, it won't be much more powerful than the next Nintendo system, even if they sell at a loss again.

Actually, based off the rumors of what Nintendo's console will be like hardware wise, all Sony and Microsoft needs to do to top it with the PS4 and x720 is base their consoles around a IBM PPC7 or PPC8 processor, ATi/Nvidia's GPUs, and 2GBs of ram.
Since I doubt Nintendo will make their console more than asking price, they will be using the cheapest best hardware they can get, while Sony and Microsoft are willing to price their consoles higher than $300. Even starting price of $400 adds a very large amount of hardware power for all components.
