Forums - Gaming - Has voice acting ever made or broken a game for you?

The uncharted sereies would lose alot of luster if it wasn't for that awesome voice acting. inFAMOUS is so good it doesn't need voice acting, but man inFAMOUS 2 is gonna be awesome with it.

The only bad bit of voice acting I've actually noticed was the famous 'Jason!' moment in Heavy Rain....

But that was because you could make him say it over and over and over again.

VGChartz

I couldn't play the new Prince of Persia because the Prince had the same actor as Nate from Uncharted... takes you right out of the game.

It just depends on the game for me.

Bioshock and Uncharted would lose a lot of what makes the overall experience stellar if the voice acting were bad.

However, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night has atrocious voice acting and it's still one of my favorite games of all time, simply because what makes the game great doesn't rely on it.

nope mechwarrior 4: mercenaries has the worst voice acting ever... it makes star ocean 4 and final fantasy x look like oscar winning performances

and I still loved it. So no for me.

For me, voice acting is probably the the lowest end of the totem pole of importance for me. If the gameplay isn't fun, or the story or characters aren't interesting, voice acting isn't that good.

Plus imo, most disney movies beat almost any videogames voiceacti

Yeah, voice acting just isn't THAT important to me, that's why I just shut it off in Arc Rise and it's all good.

I'm impressed with how many games you all have said that were really helped by good voice acting. I think good VA is something that still has plenty of room to evolve and grow with video games. I just wish some developers gave the sound and voice acting as much consideration as visuals.

Heavenly Sword and Enslaved would have been rather ordinary games if it weren't for the amazing character animation and voice acting.

I was going to bring up Heavenly Sword as well, though the game should also be given props for the excellent bullet time gameplay (can't remember what they called it). The Kai missions were crazy-fun, though overly easy if you knew how to manipulate the system (I was killing guys lightning-fast with the arrows, firing them before anyone even appeared and then slowing the arrow down to pop the guy straight in the face).

Agreed Kai missions were amazingly fun. Kai herself was a great character as well.

Mega Man 8.

Dear God, the voice acting was atrocious. I played for two stages, (Tengu Man and Clown Man) and just couldn't stand it anymore.

Hell, the male protagonist actually sounds less like a dude than his little sister.

That's... Just wrong.

Probably the only mainline Mega Man game I'll never complete.

HA! I forgot about the voice acting in MM8! It is so bad it's awesome. "I'M GRENADE MAN" has always been one of those random lines I'll yell when drunk or acting silly. Good call!

Kratos' voice was unbearable to listen to.  Vanille's made it impossible to keep playing FFXIII.

Yes.  Countless JRPGs that have been brought over to America have been so horrible in their translation and voice acting, I couldn't play them fully.  Just to name a few: Star Ocean 2, Suikoden V, XenoSaga (whole series), Valkarie Profile, Tales of Symphonia, etc.

I have never been so annoyed I needed to turn off the voices for any western made games.  But my theory is because they weren't redubbed into another language and had (mostly) quality voice actors.  Even as laughable as some voices in KOTOR or Warcraft can be at times (and I actually know their voice actors), nothing compares to the completely rushed and lack of voice 'acting' talent of many Japanese to English projects.  And its pretty sad, because many European and Central American dubs of the same game are just fine, if not good.

It amazes me that still after some 30 years of Anime and game dubbing, the dubbing industry in America isa still seen as the bottom tier of talent, only getting the most desperate or lackluster talent.  But I guess we can't really blame the companies, as its the people who purchase these games who not only keep buying the horrible dubs, but actively claim its better than its original source material.  We'll probably be stuck with them forever as long as Americans choose to plug their ears and remain ignorant to any language but their own.

Six upcoming games you should look into:
