This thread is specifically about the possibilities of how Nintendo’s new controller and cameras could deliver the illusion of a 3D experience, and is composed of info from two users:  a thread started by alfredofroylan (link below) and a post on this thread by Pyro as Bill.

Now, I’m not saying all the rumors we’ve been hearing are necessarily true, but keep in mind Nintendo’s recent foray into 3D.  After reading the alleged Ubisoft employee’s comment:  the 3D features the system offers are revolutionary and stunning, because you don´t need any glasses or 3DTV to experience it! The controller with build in screen and camera plays a huge part of that hologram like 3D effect.”, many were quick to dismiss this as ludicrous and completely impossible with reasonably priced technology.  However after Pyro referenced the youtube video below of essentially just a Wii camera (the remote) and the sensor bar reversed to achieve said effect (requiring no special screen or lenses), the possibilities started to become apparent to me.

First off, this video is from back in 2007 using a now primitive method.  Second, Kinect hacks have already shown us similar head-tracking techniques… requiring no sensors on your head.  Now while the effect in the video is pretty much reserved for one and Kinect’s technique may (or may not) have its limitations, the end result is obviously 100% possible.

What if Nintendo’s new controller has what is essentially a mini-Kinect type camera inside, one that faces the holder and basically tracks where his/her head is the whole time?  Obviously the camera (or cameras) wouldn’t be able to do full skeletal tracking; it doesn’t have to.  All it has to do is constantly track where the user’s head is while they hold the controller in front of them like they normally would, and work in tandem with a camera by the TV.

EDIT:  As many pointed out, multiplayer head tracking is impossible without multiple images being displayed.  However this could explain the purpose of the rumored screen on the individual controllers.  Furthermore, IGN's recent update stating, "Sources now confirm to IGN the new Nintendo controller allows players to stream entire games to the device from the console, saying it's like a miniature television." sounds like the controller's screen isn't for making games portable like many first assumed, but instead giving everyone their own view of the game being played on the TV, doing away with having to split the screen in a game of Mario Kart and, possibly, giving one player their own view of the 3D illusion from the TV image.  Now a nice six inch screen in your hands does admittedly sound quite alluring...

that illusin trick was actually pretty cool... and it does start to make alittle more sense.

Great thread and analysis. I was going to make a thread similiar to yours in every aspect. To be honest I strongly believe that if Nintendo is implementing motion and 3D, they would more than likely do it similiar to this method.

Who knows, it could be. I won't be in denial simply because that's not what I want.

I thought they've done something like that for the DSi.

It's the same tech you descirbed, if i got it right. For this DSi game, the camera was used like you described to do this 3D effect. I wouldn't be surprised if this tech would be used on a controler like the rumored one.

But there are some problems. Price of this controler? touchscreen, camera, HD, sticks etc, battery, processor for streaming...

I think it could be the revolution of gaming. multiplayer in one room with several (min 4player i hope) displays and an overview on the TV. AMAZING!!!

MArio KArt 3D.....ONLY for Wiitab

Wiitab is shit.

We need a better name for it. Project Cafe? wtf

Yes, I remember that game.  Something just like that, albeit more advanced.

And yeah, I kinda hope the rumors of the giant HD touchscreen are false.  I mean, it just seems like an unnecessary expense and I just don't really see the advantages of it.  The 3D illusion idea obviously has me far more excited.

Honestly, i don't understand. Wouldn't you need a controler display for multiplayer 3D action? Without the controler display, the 3D would just be a "one person only experience" like on the 3DS.

6inch isn't that giant, or not? It would be the right size imo. not 1080p on these displays, i think that's false. HD on the TV and on the controler a touchscreen with 480p. Fanboys will say 4-ductabed-gamecube, lol.

That would be a very cool way of doing it, and would pull you into the game more, sorta blur the sense of it's just a game.    It's also a better answer to 3D than 3D tvs because often other people are watching you play and on a 3D TV, a 3D image is a blurry eyestrain to non-players (yes, unless they go put on glasses), where here anyone can still watch clearly.

Looks like i'm the only one being excited about the controler-display.
