Forums - General - Race/Class/Gender/etc. Do they still matter?

Well so far as science goes race isn't an issue, it's my understanding that humans today are a success of a combination of various similar hominids of the pasts.

Gender issues remains  as so far as science is concerned there is a difference between the male of almost every species and a female of the same species.

Class is the meat and potatoes though, this one is a social issue and it's wierd how folks continue to muddle it up with the other two.  Class works on a falacy of ad populous and that may be the underlying culprit, it's a hard work and a great deal of our species have our work still ahead of us to move out of needing to be correct or have done things right or at least better than someone else has.

Gender is a social construct. Do not confuse gender with sex (which reffers to the anatomical differences between men and women). Things like "women are nurturing and men are tough" are cultural constructs.

Oh... and here's one that's REALLY going to piss you off Sapphi.

The best performing schools in the US?

Catholic Schools... which don't even usually have requirments.

This is controlling for Socioeconomic status too.

Why would this piss me off?

Because you see missioanries as a con job even though nobody is actually forced to learn about education.

I'd think a school that mandates learning about the catholic religion and tests you on it like it were math or history would piss you off.

Well, it would, if it were Governemnt funded. or if people were forced to go there. However it's a private institution and people aren't forced to send their kids there (I know I wouldn't).

And missionaries are con artists.

I don't see the difference.  People aren't forced to accept missionaries help... and hell, even if they want the help don't have to listen to it.

Versus Catholic schools, where if you do want the help of supeiror schooling you do need to listen to their religious teachings.

Either way, people should look harder at those schools and see why they do so much better.

Actually, considering the places where missionaries activate, it's really accept their help or die. It's quite easy to send your child to a school that also doesn't function as a religious propaganda institution. I know for sure I wouldn't (quite frankly I don't know why a non-Catholic would send their child there).

People should look harder at why those schools succeed (it sure ain't the religious indoctrination though).

You do realize that if you do accept their help you DON'T have to listen to their religious speeches right?

Like quite literally missionaries do things like build wells, and then they hold things like bible groups in their free time for anyone who wants to come, and if nobody comes... it's no big deal.

Then why did you bring missionaries into this in the first place? Seems like a bad comparison.

Oh I see, that saves me a bit of trouble, so long as your saying that there are physiological differences between men and women we agree. ;)

I'm Unamerica and you can too.

Because you hate missionaries.

You hate people who go to poor countries, do nice things for them, and then ask them if they would like to hear about their religion.  Though if the people say no... they still get the help.

You hate a less extreme version of religious schools.

Well of course there are physiological differences between men and women. You'd think that would be obvious.

It's not as simple as youy make it out to be. Those people from the poor countries are uneducated and ignorant, and are easily manipulated by the missionaries.

I can't say for them all but usually the religious kind substitute education with theology. The missionaries in some cases may have been the messangers. ^_^ It comes down to what you call ignorance.

On it's own the morality of religion may not be the worst avenue but that's like beheading a politician for being a trying to tell you what to do albeit indirectly.

Put it this way, when they go and help that's a good thing, when they start demanding servitude in the place of their god that's the bad part... some draw the line at faith though, but the uneducated in things other than religion hardly make that distinction.
